More questions. That was all what she just said gave me. More fucking questions.
“Amber, you are talking like you are going back to your old way of life? Fuck, you are sounding like you are going back to being a hitman!”
She had a son now. She had a job. A house in the suburbs. She wasn’t who she used to be.
“Tae said I had two options. Turn to him, marry him, relocate.” She turned her head to the side, looking me in the eye. “Tell you what’s happening. And expect you to handle it. I had a third option and that was to beg Will. That failed.”
“Tell me what’s happening?”
She turned her face away from me. “I’m not dragging you back into my life. I’m not pulling you in, expecting you to fix my problems again. I did that with the gun deal. You went to prison for six years. So, this time, I’m handling it myself.”
Amber had many great qualities but her stubbornness wasn’t one of them.
“Start telling me what the problem is.”
“Nope.”
“Amber. If you are in trouble, I want to fucking know.”
She scoffed. “Still not telling you.”
Fucking frustrating as always. How could I forget how frustrating it was to have an argument with her, when she was in one of these moods? In prison, I used to relive our fights. Used to admire how firm she was. But right now, I was being reminded of how much of a pain in the ass she was!
“You threatening someone and what? Got yourself in trouble?” She had always been good at picking fights that were out of her of her league. And then she would somehow turn it around and win.
Only she could take on a cold man like Tae, who only thought about business, and get him to asking her to marry him.
Then there was me. Look at what she did to me.
She attracted dangerous men. At least Will was safe, compared to me and Tae.
She remained quiet.
“Let me guess. Tae roped you into killing someone and now he wants you running his interests here?” I wasn’t going to stop guessing.
She shook her head.
She was really being stubborn.
“Just tell me the fucking problem so I can help!” I snapped at her. God, didn’t she know by now there wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her!
I was going to have another go at her when her house phone started ringing. That was the second time it had rang since I been here.
“You broke my phone, didn’t you?” Amber snapped at me, remembering and getting up.
I watched her walk to the phone in just her bra and jeans.
I was admiring her back tattoo when she picked up the phone.
She was silent. She didn’t say hello or anything. Like she knew who was calling. I’m guessing Will, to make up for what he said, realizing that Amber and Jack were so out of his fucking league.
“When?” Amber said into the phone. “Where?”
It must not be Will.
“Thank you for telling me.” And then she hung up.
If you didn’t know Amber, you would think right now she was okay. She wasn’t showing the obvious signs that someone would show when upset.
