Terror filled me as Jack’s face lit up with delight and he bolted down the stairs. “Bikers, Mom!” Jack pushed his way past me and stared up at his uncles. “I’m Jack.”
I wrapped my arms around Jack and pulled him back protectively toward me.
“Mom, what are you doing?” Jack grumbled as I lifted him up and put him on my hip. I would call the police and get my brothers removed from this house if I had to.
I would not let them near Jack. Not that I didn’t trust them. I just didn’t trust Jack’s father.
I couldn’t mask the terrified look on my face. All my nightmares were coming true.
Chapter Two
Amber
Cole’s mouth hung open. Adam grinned. Tyler’s eyes were glued on Jack. Troy, however, was staring directly at me with a knowing, understanding smile.
“How old are you, Jack?” Troy asked, his eyes turning from me to his nephew.
“I’m six on the twenty-seventh.” Jack said proudly.
The boys’ faces melted in understanding. They knew and I cringed. God, this was really happening.
“Mom, put me down!” Jack wiggled in my death grasp. And I just held on tighter, needing to protect him.
“Amber, we aren’t going to hurt him,” Cole said softly. He never spoke softly.
They must have been reading my expression. I wasn’t scared of them hurting him. I was afraid of Jax hurting him.
“Hey, Mom, do you think they want to watch the documentary?” Jack said with delight. It would make his night to get to watch it twice.
“No,” I said firmly.
“I know all about bikers.” Jack forced his way out of my arms. God, he was strong when he wanted to be. But god forbid he carried his own school bag. “Did you know Satan’s Sons have over forty-six charters in the country?” Jack started rattling off details from that fucking documentary, looking up at them.
I closed my eyes. This wasn’t happening. This just wasn’t happening. I was going to wake up and I’ll be next to Will.
“I know all about patches, too,” Jack said, and I groaned. This wasn’t a nightmare. Well, it was, but not one I was going to wake up from.
Jack pointed at Cole’s one percent. “That means you are part of the one percent who doesn’t follow the law.”
Cole looked down at Jack in shock, like he was witnessing a miracle.
Tyler burst out laughing and so did Adam. Even Troy had a smirk on his face as he stared down at Jack.
“Jack, you need to go back to bed.”
“Mom.” He spun around dramatically. “Stop being rude!” He turned back to the boys, standing in middle of a circle we had formed around Jack. “You’re a president.” Jack pointed at Troy.
Troy nodded and lowered to his knees. “How do you know so much about us?”
“I’ve got a documentary!” Jack exclaimed. “I watch it at least once a week.” Jack snuck a glance at me and lowered his voice. “Sometimes more. When Mom says no, I ask Will.”
I knew it! I knew he was watching it more than I thought. Why the hell did I record the thing? Let alone show it to him?
“Do you want to watch it?” Jack’s voice went up. “I’ll put it on.” Jack took off in the direction of the living room. “Mom, get Chester!”
The boys were staring at me. I saw their questions. But what I saw more was hurt.
I picked up Chester. “Well, you better go after him. Because he will be waiting.” I sighed.
