It occurred me now, maybe I hadn’t had all their attention.
“Where’s Amber?” Cole was at my side; he was always a clean shooter, so he was taking out bodies, same time as talking to me. Doing what he did best, he was hitting his targets where they would bleed out. He never gave anyone a painless death.
Three men were left. Which meant she was either among the dead or someone had taken her.
Just like we were all in sync, Troy, Cole, and I fired. Each taking out one of the targets.
“Where the fuck is Amber!” Troy yelled, panicked.
We were all thinking the same thing—she had to be among the dead.
I wouldn’t accept it.
“How many bodies?” I panicked. The boys looked at me. “Count the bodies” I yelled. It was fucking dark, dead of the morning, barely any light, so I couldn’t just rely on my eyes to give me a precise number.
“Eleven,” Troy yelled.
“Eleven, and I don’t fucking see my sister’s body.” Cole was pushing bodies over, like Amber was hiding under one of them.
“A squad is always made up of twelve.” I stated. One of them had Amber.
We all raised our guns and started moving around the shipping containers and found them right at the edge of the dock. Looked like he was about to shoot her and push her into the ocean.
I raised my gun to take him out but Adam gripped my gun and forced it down.
“What the fuck, Adam!” I roared at him but he wouldn’t get his hand off my gun.
“No one fucking shoot!” Adam yelled.
Was he not seeing what I was seeing? This man was about to kill the woman I loved!
“Fuck off, Adam!” I gripped his hand and ripped it off.
“You aren’t seeing it!” he yelled at me like I was stupid. “The man doesn’t have the gun!”
What was he talking about? We got closer. I frowned. Was I seeing this wrong? It was dark. But from what I was seeing, Amber had the gun in her hand. And a phone to her ear.
I didn’t understand. Then Amber raised the gun and shot the man between the eyes.
Thank fuck it was over. I dropped my gun to the ground. If I had counted the rounds right, I only had one in the chamber.
We were all closer now. Amber slowly turned around. She still had a phone to her ear.
“Fucking shoot her, Jax!” Adam yelled at me. “Shoot her!”
What? Shoot Amber? “I dropped my gun.” As if that was the only reason I wouldn’t be able to shoot her.
Adam dropped his gun and I had never seen that expression on his face before. “We won’t be able to do it. None of her brothers can do it!” Adam was talking fucking gibberish. “You were our only option to shoot her before she does it.”
I had no idea what he was talking about.
“Amber, just listen to us, please.” Adam put an arm out and stopped me from approaching her. “Come on, Amber, you don’t want this.”
Want what? She was fine. Well, she was going to get a fucking lecture off me when I could think straight and take a deep breath. But Adam’s reaction wasn’t making sense.
“I’m sorry, Adam.” Amber was looking directly at him. “I don’t have a choice.”
“You do, Amber. You do have a fucking choice. You can’t do this to us.” Adam’s voice was breaking in pain, and you didn’t need to look at him to know he was crying, you could hear it in his voice.
