She looked up, her eyes sharp. “When I’m through with Will, he won’t be in this city.”
Okay, what had she done? “Amber, I know you are hurting because you broke up—”
“I’m not hurting.” She cut me off like that was impossible.
I arched my eyebrows at her. “You are boxing up all his shit, while trying to run him out of town? Seems like you are hurting, sweetheart. I know how your heart works.” When she fell in love with someone, she gave them her full heart.
She had given me her heart twice. And twice I destroyed it. I wasn’t counting on her giving me a third chance.
“Jax.” She walked around the bed, coming to a stop a short distance from me. “I only love Jack. You say you know how my heart works. Then you should know, I wouldn’t give it to anyone, after what happened between us.”
I rolled my eyes. “Again. You are going to wipe every man out of your life because of me? I know I hurt you but you can’t be thinking that shit again.” I remembered when she was in England and she told me she was never trusting another man again because of me.
“I don’t need a man.” She shrugged. “Love is overrated.”
“You saying you didn’t love Will? Because from what I saw of you two, you seemed like a happy family.”
Amber opened the dresser and started picking things out. “I guess you got the wrong impression.” Her voice was cold, and she was holding back what she really wanted to say.
“Amber, you were going to marry him.” I knew she needed to get whatever she was thinking off her chest.
“Guess I’ve got bad taste in men.” She wouldn’t look at me but started to empty the contents of the drawer into a brown box.
“He loved you.” I crossed my arms. “He loved Jack. Hell, I reckon he still loves Jack. He was planning on marrying you and having a family.”
She slammed the drawer shut, turned around sharply, and walked to a box, picking up something and then throwing it at me.
I caught it out of reflex. Why was she throwing things at me?
She gestured her head toward me. “Look at it. What do you see?”
I looked down at the picture of Amber and Will. Amber looked stunning. No shock there. Will was smiling. What was I meant to see? I looked up at her. “I guess happiness?” I glanced back down at the picture and then back at her. “You look happy.” They both looked happy.
“He fucked his assistant that night.”
I frowned, looking at her. “But he was with you. Why would he do that when he has you? You are…”
“Not blonde.” She scoffed, finishing my sentence. “He has a thing for blondes.”
“He went for some average blonde over you?” Was the man mad? He had no idea how lucky he was. “You stayed with him, even though he slept with someone else?”
She shrugged and picked up another photo from the box and threw it at me. “What does that picture tell you?”
I looked down at the picture, seeing Amber and Will smiling. “What, did he sleep with another blonde?”
“Nope. He got me pregnant.”
So, she had tried to start a family with him.
“I had an abortion as soon as I found out and never told him.”
My head snapped up. “What?”
She looked me in the eye. “I didn’t tell him. I had an abortion one month after that photo.”
“Why? Why would you do that?” I looked at her, trying to read her body language.
“I didn’t want a connection with him.” She turned to face me. “I never wanted him to be a permeant fixture in my life. Let alone have his child.”
