Caleb seems the type who would punch someone who tried to hug him. I bite the inside of my cheek to hide my smile whenhe awkwardly pat the coach’s back as the kids go crazy with the news.

As our eyes connect, he smiles, and I smile back.

Chapter 31

Tobie

I’m gettingready to go to bed when a knock sounds on my door.

Today was exhausting. After we cheered the kids to victory, I climbed into the Wolverines’ bus, and we stopped at a BBQ restaurant for a late lunch. It was jampacked with it being a weekend, but the restaurant had a back room that the Wolverines’ coach talked the owner into letting us rent.

It was loud and messy. There were long tables of laughing, chatting, arguing, hockey players stopping long enough to devour the delicious brisket, ribs, chicken, and steak with macaroni and cheese and cornbread sides.

Not everyone drank, but there were plenty of pitchers of beer to go around for those who wanted it and sodas for those who didn’t.

I sat with Reid, Caleb, and Javier, and at no point did I feel like I didn’t belong.

When I returned to my dorm, Max had left my car keys on my desk, and she was nowhere to be found, so I couldn’t ask her why she pulled a disappearing act back at the rec.

I swing open my door, and Reid’s gaze sweeps over me.

He smiles. “Ah, good. I timed it right.”

I frown. “Timed what right?”

He pulls his cell phone from his pocket and taps a few buttons. I study him, bemused, until he turns the screen to show me a timer.

Set for one hour.

The last time he said something about one hour was…

No.

My mouth goes dry. And that’s before I see the heat in his eyes.

“Pussy—”

I clap my hand over his mouth and peer down the empty hallway, whispering, “Quit saying that so loud. Someone might hear you.”

If the girls on my floor knew what he came to do, they’d shove me out of the nearest window and take my place.

His eyes sparkle with amusement as he wraps one arm around my waist, carries me into my room, and closes the door. He peels my hand from his mouth and kisses me. “You look beautiful.”

I flush with pleasure. “No, I don’t.”

“You do,” he says, smiling slightly. “All soft and sweet. Getting ready to go to bed?”

I nod.

Reid dips his head, still smiling. “And instead, I come along to—” He laughs and catches my hand before I can cover his mouth again. He kisses the inside of my wrist, which makes my breath catch.

His next kiss is longer, deeper, and sweeter.

I’m not the only one breathing hard when we break apart.

“I’ve wanted to do that all day. Tripped over my own feet thinking about it. Coach benched me.”

“No, he didn’t because you didn’t have practice. You want me to feel sorry for you, so I’ll kiss you again.”
