I can’t say that though, so I just force a smile. “I’ll see what I can do.”

Which will be absolutely nothing. I don’t need to see that playing out in front of me. Never mind, listening to it when he decides to bring her back here.

“Thanks, Penny. Get some sleep,” he says, walking out and closing my door.

Sleep never comes because I can’t stop thinking of someone else touching Jace in ways I will only ever imagine.

Jace

Henry left yesterday. It’s just me and Penny now, which is why I haven’t gotten out of bed yet. The idea of seeing her walking around in something she shouldn’t is fucking killing me. She looked so good the other night when we all went out. The tight jeans she had on and the much too low-cut black shirt. It was impossible to keep from watching her. She was so carefree dancing with her friends. Henry was all over one of her friends, Jessica. But I just sat and watched. They all tried to get me on the dance floor, but I couldn’t do it. If I went out there, I would have either pulled Penny against me or kicked the shit out of someone for looking at her. It was best I stayed sitting.

Now I can’t get the image of her dancing out of my head. The way her body moved. The way her hair was begging to be pulled. The way her flushed skin was an invitation for my mouth. She’s fucking killing me, and she has no idea.

The sound of a glass breaking snaps me out of my thoughts and has me rushing out of my room. I get to the kitchen and see Penny standing over a broken mug.

She snaps her head to me with wide eyes. “I’m so sorry,” she whispers.

She’s barefoot, standing surrounded by glass. Not to mention with a shirt on that barely covers her ass. She goes to move, and I throw my arm out stopping her.

“Don’t fucking move. There’s glass everywhere and you’re barefoot for Christ’s sake.” I reach over and lift her up, placing her behind me.

Bad move on my part. I touched her and now I’m on goddamn fire.

“Thanks,” she whispers.

I spin around and narrow my eyes at her. “Thanks for cleaning up your mess? Yeah, no problem. Go put some fucking clothes on, will you? I can see your ass for fuck sake,” I growl.

She shakes her head and goes straight to her room. I close my eyes, leaning against the counter as I scrub my face. “Fuck,” I whisper.

I quickly clean up the mess and start a pot of coffee, which is what I think she was attempting to do. I grab two cups out of the cabinet and pour some in each. I know how she takes her coffee, I’ve seen her make it a million times, so I add some French vanilla creamer to hers and some sugar to mine. I leave it on the counter and take mine to my room.

Once I’m dressed for work, I bring my empty mug out of my room. She’s sitting on the couch, sipping on her coffee. I hold back a grin because I know, even if just for a single moment, I brought her a bit of happiness.

“Thank you, Jace,” she says, not looking away from the TV.

“Yeah. I’m heading to work. Maybe you should start looking for something,” I say, grabbing my travel mug out of the cabinet.

“You think I haven’t tried?” she says, coming into the kitchen.

I let my eyes drag down her body, thankful she put on clothes. “Did I say you haven’t?” I ask, filling up my cup.

“No, but you implied it.”

I shake my head, tightening the top. “Sometimes when you want something you have to fight to get it. You want a job, and they don’t call you back, fucking call them. Ask if they’ve looked over your resume. Don’t let them forget about you, fight for it.”

Advice I’ll only take when it comes to my career.

She doesn’t say anything, and I grab my keys and walk out the door. I take a deep breath; thankful I can breathe easily. She’s wrapping around me, strangling the air out of my lungs. Making it difficult to take a breath.

Work will be a nice escape and I might even work late tonight.

Ipull into the parking garage a little after nine. It was a long day and that was my doing. I could’ve left at five like normal, but I stayed, and now I’m ahead of myself for the week. But I couldn’t come home. Not knowing she’s here. I needed time to breathe and let my body relax.

When I open the door, I’m surprised to find the place is quiet. I drop my keys on the entry table and walk into the kitchen. I open the fridge and find a plate wrapped in foil. I pull it out and see a note on top.

You made my coffee, so I made you dinner.
