ROMEO

As I wheeled my suitcase through the airport, my heart pounded.

It was Sunday morning and I was on my way to London: to surprise Sammie.

The past week had been a rollercoaster.

When I first suggested to Victoria that the hotel hire Sammie, after being silent for what felt like hours, she finally agreed that it was a good idea.

She said she could not promise anything, but she would speak to the management and get back to me.

It took five agonising days before Victoria told me that they were interested, especially because Jasmine had also vouched for her, but they said that Sammie would have to go through the same interview process as other applicants and only then could they make a decision.

That was good enough for now. We had a chance, which was a big deal.

This kind of news was too important to share over a video call and it had been a month since I had seen Sammie and I missed her like crazy. Which was why I had decided to fly to London to surprise her face to face and hopefully convince her not to give up on us.

Although we had still been messaging, it was not as frequent as before and I was worried that I needed to do something to prove that I was still as committed and determined as ever for us to be together.

It was a risky move. Particularly because she had messaged yesterday to ask if we could video call and I had said I would prefer to speak today instead.

I hoped she did not feel rejected, but I knew that if I saw her face I would blurt out the news and I wanted to do it in person.

My phone chimed.

It was Stella.

After I explained that I wanted to surprise Sammie and needed Stella’s help to make it happen, Jasmine had passed on her number.

Stella screamed when I first called her. And when she told me that she’d already arranged to meet Sammie today so thought it would be easy to set up the surprise, I was so relieved.

All set. I’m going to Sammie’s in a couple of hours then I’ll take her to the meeting point.

Me

Grazie. I will board the plane shortly. Ciao.

My chest bloomed.
