I shifted uncomfortably under his intense gaze. "I'm not claiming to be anything like that."
"Of course not," he agreed smoothly. "Yet the similarities are... striking." He gestured to the silver light pulsing beneath my skin. "That connection—it's not something one can fabricate or force. It simply is."
The ward rippled around us, responding to my unease. I could feel it drawing slightly closer, like a protective embrace.
"Your offer of partnership," I said, steering us back to the matter at hand. "What exactly would it entail?"
The King clasped his hands before him, shadows coiling around his fingers like living smoke. "Safe passage through my territories. Access to knowledge that has been hidden for centuries. Protection from the Queens' forces." His ice-blue eyes held mine with unsettling intensity. "And in return, I ask only that you consider the possibility that Wonderland brought you here for a purpose greater than becoming another pawn in the endless game between Hearts and Clubs."
"That's not exactly specific," I pointed out, watching the shadows dance between his fingers. "What would you expect from me day to day?"
"Your presence in my court, occasionally," he replied. "Your insight on matters of magic. Perhaps, in time, your assistance in restoring balance to regions where the fabric of Wonderland has grown thin." The shadow tendrils reached toward my ward again, not testing but almost caressing it. "I have no interest in controlling you…”
There was a pause as he looked at me with darkening eyes, “Though I wouldn't say no to getting to know you.” I felt a subtle pulse of something distinctly Alpha in his words, not a command but an invitation that made my Omega instincts stir. The silver patterns beneath my skin brightened in response.
"You're very forward for someone standing outside my ward," I said, trying to maintain my composure despite the unexpected flutter in my chest.
The King's smile deepened, shadows shifting around him like a cloak adjusting to its wearer's movements. "Directness saves time, and time is something Wonderland has precious little of at the moment." He studied me with those ice-blue eyes. "The Queens will not wait patiently while you consider your options. Even now, the Red Queen's Card Guards are sweeping throughthe outer territories. The Queen of Clubs has her Vine Soldiers probing the boundaries of the Tulgey Wood."
As if confirming his words, I felt a distant pressure against the barrier. I frowned but didn’t say anything.
“I would like to protect and get to know you..” The king started but was cut off by another.
"Better than most that have approached you," a voice purred from behind me. Chi materialized at my side, his form more solid than usual, those teal eyes gleaming with dangerous light in the darkness. "How unexpected to find the King of Spades himself at our humble boundary."
I jumped slightly at Chi's sudden appearance but felt immediate relief at his presence. The ward pulsed in recognition, welcoming him while maintaining its vigilance toward the King.
"Cheshire," the King acknowledged with a slight incline of his head. "Still lurking in shadows not your own, I see."
Chi's smile widened to impossible proportions. "I prefer to think of it as being everywhere I'm needed. A talent your shadows can only imitate." The tension between them crackled like electricity, ancient and personal. I sensed centuries of history in their careful postures.
"The Cheshire Cat," the King said, his tone deceptively mild. "Always appearing at the most... inconvenient moments."
Chi circled me protectively, his tail flicking with barely contained agitation. "Forgive me if I find a monarch testing our boundaries in the middle of the night somewhat concerning."
The King's expression remained calm, though the shadows around him writhed more actively. "Merely introducing myself to our newest arrival. It would be impolite to ignore such a significant presence in Wonderland."
"Your courtesy is noted," Chi replied dryly. "Though most would consider sending a formal invitation more appropriate than midnight boundary-testing."
I glanced between them, sensing the centuries of complex history beneath their carefully measured words. The air itself seemed to thicken with tension, magic responding to their mutual wariness.
"Alice has created quite an impressive ward," the King observed, changing the subject with smooth precision. "Self-aware, adaptive. Remarkable for one so new to our realm."
"Alice is remarkable in many ways," Chi agreed, materializing more fully beside me, his presence warm against my side. "Which is precisely why she deserves time to acclimate before being approached by those with... political interests."
The King's smile remained fixed, but the shadows around him darkened. "We both know time is a luxury Wonderland can ill afford at present. The Queens have already mobilized their forces."
"And yet here you are, alone, without your Shadow Guard," Chi noted, his tail swishing thoughtfully behind him. "Curious for a monarch in such... uncertain times."
"Perhaps I wished for a private conversation," the King replied, his gaze returning to me. "Without the usual trappings of court protocol."
"How convenient," Chi purred, though the sound held a dangerous edge. "And what did you hope to accomplish in this private conversation, Your Majesty?"
The King's eyes remained fixed on me. "I was extending an offer of alliance to Miss Alice. A genuine partnership, rather than the servitude the Queens would demand."
"How generous," Chi remarked, his voice dripping with skepticism. "And naturally, such generosity comes with no expectations whatsoever."
I placed a restraining hand on Chi's arm, feeling his form solidify further at my touch. "The King was explaining thebenefits of his protection," I said, trying to sound diplomatic. "I appreciate hearing all perspectives."
