“You’re broken.” Bella edged closer to Duncan’s chair. “More so than us.”

Her statement hit too close to home. “What makes you think I’m broken?”

She snorted, gaining back some of her bravado. “Broken knows broken.”

Duncan laughed, the noise devoid of humor. “So you say.” Duncan removed his foot from Enzo’s shoulder before standing. “I’m going to grab a shower. I’m exhausted.”

“You’re leaving?” Bella blinked. “I thought it was our decision?”

“It is. However, we don’t need to hash this out tonight.” He started for the bathroom. “Take the time to think it over.” He paused midway and turned. “Don’t join me, either.”

The ache behind his eyes grew as he stepped into the bathroom. His mind swam with images of Bella and Enzo. It would have been so easy to give over to what he’d seen. To tear off his clothes and ride Enzo’s ass until they were all spent. At least then the ache in his dick would be gone. At least then he’d find some peace. Instead, he did the right thing. He laid it all out there and gave them the choice to either agree to his terms or end it before they got started.

Thomas would say he was maturing, even though the bastard was only a few years older than him. Nevertheless, deep down, he agreed with his mentor and gatekeeper. In the years since he joined the FBI as a consultant, only under Thomas’s guidance had he been free. The other agents treated him like a felon, and rightfully so. They used him when it had been advantageous to do so. Then Thomas came along. Where Thomas had a thing for numbers, Duncan had the knowledge for how cartels and narcos ran their businesses. From the moment they’d started working together, Thomas never made Duncan feel less than. To Thomas, Duncan was FBI. It’d been what made them an effective team.

On his own, as he was now, he floundered. It would have been so easy to fall back into his old ways. To become the Sergeant at Arms his father always wanted him to be. At some point over the last twenty plus years, Duncan grew up and wanted to be his own man. To do better for himself. He also wished he could talk to his baby brother Liam, once, if only to impart the wisdom Thomas gave Duncan.

Duncan glanced at his reflection in the mirror and scrubbed his face. The dull ache grew a little more painful. If he didn’t take something now, he’d have a full-blown migraine soon. As it was, he didn’t need his shot. He grabbed the Aspirin from the medicine cabinet and took two, then he went to the shower and started it. Everything was a task. Removing his shirt. Unlacing his pants. Taking off his boots. When had he become so bone-tired? When had this exhaustion overtaken him? Was it because of the two people who lay in his bed? Was it the last assignment?

Deep down, Duncan knew this wasn’t his life. How did a one criminal look at another and pass judgement on them? When had he become a hypocrite? He stepped under the spray and groaned when the hot water massaged the tense knot of muscles at his neck and shoulders. He had to stop lying. He’d done a lot of things to blend in, especially when working cases that got a little too close for home, and now, he wanted to be himself and say fuck it all. He could still do his job.

Duncan washed his hair then scrubbed his body. After he finished up, he shut off the faucet and got out, half-surprised no one tried to join him. He knew he told them not to bother him, yet Enzo and Bella had minds of their own. They did a lot of things they were told not to. He dried the water from his hair then wrapped the towel around his waist. He didn’t bother to grab clothes. The meds were already kicking in, and the ache in his head began to recede, thankfully.

Silence greeted him when he opened the door. Even if he should’ve been repulsed by their display, he hadn’t been. He’d seen it as an opportunity. He’d been ready to take advantage of both Bella and Enzo to relieve some of the stress building inside of him. He’d witnessed their reactions in the club and knew they were excited by the scenes they’d watched together. Duncan’s cock twitched and began to harden once more.

Decided to get back on board with the idea, did ya? He scoffed at himself as he pulled the couch apart to make his bed. Dropping the towel around his waist by the end table, he yanked back the sheets and climbed in. Tomorrow, he’d have to apologize for his actions and try to make up for it. Duncan closed his eyes and sighed. As long as his headache didn’t return, he’d get a few hours of peace. As he drifted between consciousness and sleep, he felt the bed dip twice. His eyes flashed open, and there were Bella and Enzo sitting on either side of him, naked.

“Who are you, Duncan?” Bella ran her fingertips over his tattoo. “Where do you come from?”

“We don’t care, hermoso. We have no business judging.” Enzo ran his hand under the covers and stroked Duncan’s hip.

“What are you two up to?” Duncan allowed his accent to come through. “I thought I said I wanted to be alone tonight.”

“How can we follow your rules when you’re the one in so much pain?” Enzo trailed his finger along the thick stalk of Duncan’s dick. The soft touch sent a thrill down his spine and settled in his balls. It was torture, pure and simple.

“Pain?”

Bella nodded. “Your heart.”

Duncan chuckled, the sound sad and indifferent.

“You’re like a cat with a stuck paw.” Bella inched closer. “You know it hurts. We know it hurts, but you’re afraid to let anyone fix it because it means trusting someone to not cause you more pain.”

Bullseye.

Duncan stared up at her. She was inches from him. Her breasts were at the perfect level for him to take her nipple between his teeth and bite down. He wanted to hear her cry out. Wanted to taste her flesh to find out if her skin was as sweet as her words. He turned his head and stared at Enzo. The man sat a bit lower, content to caress the area around Duncan’s groin, turning Duncan on more with each pass of his hand.

“You want to mend my heart?”

Bella nodded. “If you’ll let us.”

“How do you mend a heart when yours is already broken?”

Bella’s bottom lip trembled. “Because you understand the anguish the person feels, so you know what it’ll take to put the pieces back together again.”

“Oh?” Duncan placed his hand on her hip. “What will put my broken heart together?”

Bella smiled, lowering herself until her mouth almost touched his. “Kindness? Someone caring about you.”
