“Shut up,” he quipped. “You don’t care about the money. You care more about the D.”
“Oh, gross,” I muttered, pushing past him while he chuckled. “You’re such a neanderthal.”
“A truthful neanderthal, nonetheless.” He got to the door first. “Have everything you need?”
I paused. “Why wouldn’t I?”
He shrugged. “You were a little off back there.”
Well. Duh. I’d found out a few seconds before he pounded on the door that I was pregnant. I was allowed to experience pregnancy brain. Or, whatever. “Sure. Right as rain.”
“If you say peachy keen, then I know there’s a problem.”
I laughed. “Asshole. Come on. We don’t want to keep the guests waiting.”
The guests consisted of my family and Mack’s, along with our friends. After the last couple of weeks, we deserved to let our hair down and have fun. Edgar was sitting in a federal lock up on warrants I hadn’t even known about. Plus, his name wasn’t Edgar Lux. That was an alias. His real name was Sergio Guerra. He was also married and had four kids back in Mexico. Of course, the wife was taken care of and so were the kids, however, she probably didn’t know why her husband wasn’t coming home anymore.
Them’s the breaks.
Also, all of the boosted vehicles had been returned to their rightful owners, including the Alfa Romeo Mack had bid on. All in all, we’d done good. I was only sorry I hadn’t acted sooner. Although, I had my suspicions none of this would have been possible without Mack, Cobi, and Jax’s help. If I’d gone straight to the police like I’d been tempted to, I’d probably be buried six feet under somewhere in the backwoods of Tennessee.
“There she is,” Mack said in greeting. He met me at the bottom of the stairs with a drink in one hand and a sinful grin on his face. “You look ravishing.”
I took his outstretched hand then allowed him to spin me in a circle. “Why, thank you.” I wrapped my arm around his middle, allowing him to tuck me into his side. “You look delectable yourself.”
“This old suit?” He motioned to it. “I just happened to put on it this morning.”
I rolled my eyes. His suits weren’t old and cost more than my entire wardrobe put together. “Sure.”
“Let’s get you a drink.” He ushered me toward the bar.
“Uh, about that, can we talk for a second?” I drew the corner of my bottom lip between my teeth. “Privately?”
Mack stared at me for a moment. His gaze traveled every inch of me, as if he were trying to detect whatever was going on. He nodded then led me to one of the offices behind the bar area. Once we were inside, he pinned me to the door, stealing my breath with a scorching kiss. I threw my arms around his neck, sinking into his embrace and thanking whatever deity helped create smudge-free lipstick.
“Much better.” His breath caressed my sensitive lips, and a thrill shot down my spine.
I took a second to compose myself, straightening out my dress before picking up my clutch where I’d dropped it. “I have something to show you, but you better not make a sound when you see it. I don’t want anyone else to know this yet.”
His eyes narrowed as he took a step closer to me, his big body looming over mine. “I can’t make any promises. You know that.”
I did. But, for this, he’d listen. “It’s the only time I’ll ever ask.” Okay, that might come back to bite me in the ass, but I wanted to keep my pregnancy quiet for now so we could bask in the excitement without all the questions and preparation.
He stood there for a moment then nodded. “Okay, just this once.”
I let out the breath I’d been holding then pulled the pregnancy test out of my bag. “Surprise, you’re going to be a daddy.”
Mack’s features screwed up momentarily as though his brain was having a problem processing what I’d said. Then, as if his vision cleared, he realized what I was holding. His gaze darted from me to the test then back again. “You’re... You’re pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You’re going to have a baby.” He took the test from me and stared at it.
“We’re going to have one, yes,” I agreed.
“Holy shit.” His features lit up. His cheeks were pink, and his eyes sparkled with excitement. The smile on his face was brilliant, showing truly how ecstatic he was. “Holy shit. You’re going to be a mom.”
I laughed, not at all surprised by his display. “I am.”
