Drew dropped his head forward while Thomas’ face turned red. “Fucking Oscar.” Drew scrubbed his face. “He was with Thomas for the planning.”
“God damn it,” Thomas snapped. “This is fucking bullshit.”
The room went silent. There wasn’t much else to say. It appeared they found a mole, probably one of several, within the FBI. The more evidence they collected about Oscar, the worse their situation became. The man was a menace. He not only traded intel on Ginger and his family, but Jake’s team as well. The only question remaining was why? What did he get out of it? Money? Higher pay grade?
“You should know,” Luca stated, breaking the silence. “I deleted the job from that specific server. Then, I announced to all the members of my club and specifically on the site, if anyone came after Duane Silver, they would deal with me. I’ve been assured the message was heard loud and clear. Duane and your family are safe, Mr. Callahan.”
Drew grunted. “Thanks, man. I appreciate that. I know Paisley will too.”
“Not a problem.” He glanced at device on the desk where AJ sat. “I also have some information for you as well, Murray. A little birdy tells me there is an angel in Los Angeles, near the port.”
The growl of rage that poured from Murray didn’t surprise Jake. “Then I believe I have a plane to catch with my team.”
“I’m sending you the information now.” Luca tapped away on his phone. “It’s the name of a detective friend who owes me several favors. He’ll help you out.”
“I appreciate you,” Murray said then added before ending the call, “I wish I had time to catch up with you.”
“Same. I might stick around a while to help, if Asher is willing.” Luca shrugged.
“We could use your help,” Asher said. “Unofficially, of course.”
“Of course,” Luca said, drifting over to where Thomas and AJ were along with Tex. “I can get you the evidence you need without issue.”
Asher nodded. “Which brings us back to Tex.”
Tex stepped forward and cleared his throat. “Because we could piece together everything Oscar sent out, I was also able to find bits and pieces of data sent from the FBI to him. I’m not sure what it is yet. As of right now, because of the thumb drive, AJ’s computer, along with every computer on the base, is corrupted. My laptop is running a cleaner at the moment to fix the corruption on the remaining files so that we’ll be able to figure out who was in charge and where the original orders come from.”
“How long?” Jake asked. “How long will we be in the dark?”
“Could be a couple of days or a couple of weeks. Depends on how long it takes to fix everything. Considering the fact R.O.O.T. is also out of commission could add considerable time. However, the evidence gathered and cleaned already should afford you some wiggle room with the bigwigs.”
“Senator McNamara should be by some time tomorrow morning to examine everything we have, along with a couple of the members of the defense and foreign intelligence committees. From there, I am hoping we get reinstated. We’re flying blind right now and that puts all of us at risk.”
When they were done with the meeting, they headed back upstairs. He knew he needed to talk to Ginger about everything that had happened, but he wanted to hold off. With all the shit going on, she should have a minute to relax and unwind. Fuck knows, the minute they got the ‘all clear,’ from the committees, the team would be right back to going balls to the walls.
As he stepped out of the basement, he spotted Ginger sitting with the wives of their team. She fit in so perfectly with them. Fawn sat to the side with Ollie, along with who he assumed was Savannah and the babies, Knox, and Esmerelda. The younger people, he assumed, were part of Bexley’s team, greeted her as she stepped outside into the early evening sun.
“She looks good here with us,” Asher said, coming up behind him. “Just fucking sucks she had to join us this way.”
“Nah, you jinxed me,” Jake laughed. “That fucking day you got into my face, you fucked me up.”
Asher shrugged. “You needed a wake-up call. But, seriously, a fucking security guard, Jake?”
“Paid the bills, made a new friend.” He inclined his head to Wyatt, who was being introduced to Bexley.
“Justin said he’s a good one. Got a good head on his shoulders and knows his shit,” Asher stated. “Before we had to leave the base, he was already tweaking the performance of Justin’s drone.”
“Told you. The kid is a wiz. He has better instincts than I did at his age, too.” Plus, Jake owed Wyatt his life for saving him and his family.
“Well, before shit went south, I offered him a non-combat position within the team. He accepted. As soon as we’re free, he’s one of us.”
“Good to hear.” Jake stared at Ginger as she laughed at something Maggie said to the group.
“Go on, we’ll talk more about business tomorrow.” Asher shoved him toward Ginger.
“Thanks man.”
His commander inclined his chin. “Not a problem.”
