“No, we are but—”

He shook his head. “So why would you let me flirt with Boss Man’s girl, knowing he’s writing my checks, too, and not say shit? Was it a setup?”

“No! Of course not!”

“So you let me put my job in jeopardy for shits and giggles?”

“I’m sorry it seems like that because I’m sure that’s how it looks. But it’s not—”

The elevator dinged and my lips snapped shut. The doors opened and Taisha, Jacqueline, and Matias walked out, giving us a suspicious look.

“What’s going on here?” Jacqueline wondered, looking between us.

“Nina decided to finally give Jonah a shot,” Matias guessed loudly. “Damn her boyfriend!”

Russ and Remedy happened to walk by just as Matias’s words left his mouth. They both stopped and we all looked.

An awkward silence hung in the air.

Russ walked off but Remedy remained, hands on her hips.

“What’s going on?” Remedy asked. “The meeting is in twenty minutes in the conference room, not the elevator bank.”

“We’re on our way,” Jacqueline responded. Looking back at us, she waved her arm. “Come on.”

Jonah and Matias started walking with her.

Jonah looked back at me and shook his head.

Taisha grabbed my arm and pulled me toward her as we trailed behind them. “What’s going on? Why is the vibe off?” she asked me in a low tone.

I swallowed hard. “Jonah asked me about my boyfriend—”

“Russell Long,” she stated in a low tone.

My eyebrows flew up.I knew she knew!

“Don’t look at me like that. I’m not stupid. The matching shoes. The way you two eye fuck each other when you think no one islooking. But what really proved it for me…” She lifted my arm and pointed to my wrist. “The fantasy.”

I closed my eyes. “Oh my God.”

“Girl, please.” She waved her hand away. “But what’s going on with Jonah?”

“He found out about us and feels like his job is in jeopardy. And it’s really not. But he’s mad and”—I sighed—“I don’t know.”

She made a sympathetic face. “I feel where he’s coming from though.”

“Me too. But his job really was never in jeopardy.”

As we walked through the conference room doors, our conversation ended. Taking a seat, we silently joined the other models.

“I need to drop some paperwork off. I’ll be right back,” I told them, rising to my feet.

“Where are you going?” Jacqueline wondered. “Is it paperwork we need to do, too?”

“No, it’s something else,” I replied, quickly exiting so I wouldn’t be asked more questions.

Nina: They know.
