Cara laughs freely.

“It was nice when it was me one-upping you.”

“It was good for me, too, seeing you winning.”

“Always on my side.”

“What’s that?”

Cara sits up straight.

“I never saw it. But you really were always on my side. The whole time.”

“I always wanted what was best for you. I saw what you had. I simply played a small part in helping you grow.”

Cara leans forward and kisses me softly. As she pulls back, she wraps her arms around my neck as she stays kneeling on the couch.

“You’ve been here the whole time, and I’m just seeing you now.”

I rub her back gently.

“What’s important is we both got here.”

She kisses me once more before getting back to her original position across from me.

“Can I ask you something else?” she asks.

“You don’t have to preface it like that.”

“The other night, Noelle told me about something I’d like to talk to you about, but if it’s too much, then I understand.”

“What is it?”

“She told me about you and Brad and the fire.”

I sigh as I scrub my hand down my face.

“She did?”

“Kind of. She didn’t go into details. I was hoping you could tell me.”

“I’m not trying to hide this from you, but it’s a rather simple story.”

“I’m listening.”

“Brad and I were out one night. I saved his life from a burning building.”

Cara gasps, and her eyes widen.

“I know it sounds over-the-top, but Brad really felt like a friend. I probably had gotten too close to him in such a short amount of time, but that’s what he was.”

“I understand how that could happen.”

“I saw the building on fire and knew Brad was in there. I didn’t think—I just reacted. Ever since that night, Brad has had a soft spot for our friendship.”

“That really…”

“What?”
