“Oh, that sounds bad,” I said, hugging his arm.
“Yes, and then the race would have been over for him. But it didn’t,” he said calmly.
Still filled with a raging lust, I squeezed his hand. Leaning closer, I tried again. Kissing his ear, I whispered his name, “Makari.”
He suddenly sprang up with everyone else. They were screaming and jumping as Pavel had won the race. Reluctantly, I joined them. My mind was heading home already. The announcer’s voice came blaring through the speakers. “Pavel Vasiliev in car thirty-five has won the race with a record time.”
Turning to Makari, I saw that he was shining with excitement and pride. If his smile were any broader, it would wrap around his head. As more announcements came through, the room fell silent as everyone listened.
The announcer cleared his throat before speaking. “Congratulations to racers one, two, and three. Please note that these young men's family, sponsors, and friends will be welcome at the winner circle event later tonight.”
Makari glanced at me, his smile tempting me. I was excited for them, but wanted him to take me home. He pulled me into a quick hug and kissed my cheek. “Did you see that?” he asked.
Before I could reply, the Chernykh brothers approached us. They shook Makari’s hand as the eldest spoke. “Well, I must say, your brother has done us all proud today.”
“Thank you,” Makari responded. “It is his passion, after all.”
“Yes, it clearly is,” the other one added. I think Makari called him Avgust. “That means we will all be attending the party.” He looked me up and down as he continued. “Right, Makari?”
“Well,” Makari said, looking at me strangely.
Before he could continue, the Chernykh sisters interrupted. Misha flung her arms around his neck. She kissed his cheek and congratulated him. I felt disgusted and slightly angry as I watched. But then he pushed her back softly as he spoke. “Thanks, but you should give those to Pavel.”
They laughed, and Misha blushed. Surely, he wasn’t going to this party. After all, he had to take me home. There was so much tension between us; I was sure he could also feel it. Something had to happen soon.
Before I could ask, Pavel entered carrying a large golden trophy. Everybody’s attention turned to him as they cheered. Pavel moved around the room, shaking hands with each person. Misha even kissed him, and I couldn’t help but notice the blush coloring Pavel’s cheeks. He was obviously flustered as well, but the blush still showed.
A waitress came in, serving everyone a glass of champagne. Makari handed me one as he pulled me closer.
He held me tight around my waist, squeezing me tenderly. I couldn’t stop absorbing his essence. I wanted him more than ever. My hunger for him grew with each twitch or move. We toasted and drank champagne as everyone congratulated Pavel.
Then, once we placed our glasses down, he turned to the Chernykh sisters standing beside us. “Excuse me, Misha,” he said. “Can I ask you to please take Grace to my house and just make sure she’s safe?”
“Sure thing,” Misha responded, smiling.
Glancing at him, I wondered what was happening. I pulled away, making him look at me. “No!” I grumbled. “I want you to take me home. Please, why won’t you go home with me?”
“No, sorry, Grace,” Makari replied. “I have to go with Pavel. But Misha will take good care of you. You will get home safely. I have arranged with two guards to stay there. You really don’t have to worry about a thing.”
I felt disappointed and a little humiliated as well. He handed me off like an old rag. I didn’t know the Chernykh sisters that well, yet he trusted them with my life. I didn’t want to go with them. I wanted to stay with him. Or at least he could have taken me home.
Wasn’t he interested in what I had to offer? Didn’t he want to go home with me? I thought he did, but then something changed. I couldn’t understand why he would do such a thing.
Chapter 11 - Makari
Once the women were out of the booth, Avgust gestured for me to follow him. He walked to the back corner. As I joined him, I noticed his tense shoulders and aggressive look. “You really fucked up this time!” he spat at me.
Frowning, I spoke while trying to comprehend what I had done. “How, I don’t understand, Avgust. How did I mess up?”
“You should have killed her as we asked. But no, you had other plans, right?” He glanced over my shoulder at Iosif, who was still at the window, talking to Pavel and one of the other men. “As punishment, I’m sending you on an urgent errand. If her life means anything to you, you will get this done now.”
He held out an envelope as he continued. “Take this. The instructions are inside. Now go. Don’t be late.”
I was filled with rage as I listened to his arrogant demands. But I knew playing nice was my only option. “Avgust,” I pleaded. “This wasn’t on the week’s schedule.”
“I don’t care, Makari. You want her safe. You’ll do as you’re told,” Avgust replied. I hated the way he treated Pavel and me. But I knew there was no other option. Out of all the Chernykh siblings, I despised him the most. He was also the most likely to turn into his father.
I calmed myself, knowing that Grace would be safe with the sisters. They would take her home without issues. I could trust them and knew when it came to their brother, they didn’t take shit. They would stand up to any of them without a second thought.
