“No.”

“Just follow my lead.” Chase put a hand on her waist and another out to the side. She took his hand and put her other hand on his shoulder.

“Like this?”

“You got it.” He took her through some dance steps and then spun her around in a circle.

“This is fun! How did you learn how to do this?”

“I took some lessons back in California. I learned West Coast Swing dancing too. It’s a lot of fun.”

Lauren was impressed with Chase’s dance moves. “You’re good at this. You make me feel like I’m a good dancer, and I have no idea what I’m doing.” He spun her in a few circles, and her hair flew out around her as she moved.

“You’re a natural,” Chase said.

After a few songs, Lauren felt like she was starting to get the hang of it.

When their karaoke song was up, Chase grabbed Lauren’s hand and led her to the stage. Lauren stood around the microphone with Chase, and she could smell his cologne. He smelled great, clean and athletic. The music started up, and the lights hit her. Everything in that moment seemed surreal. How had she found herself standing on a stage with Chase Remington about to sing a Remington Sound song?

Her eyes focused on the words on the screen, and she sang her lines.

There you stand across the room

Air so thick; I just can’t breathe

Chase began singing, and the crowd went wild.

Looking at you; I arrived

Memories swirling through my mind

Lauren picked up with her part again.

All we’ve been through, all we’ve known

We can still get through this now

Lauren couldn’t help the smile that stretched across her face. Cell phones began flashing as people from the tavern began taking snapshots of their performance. Lauren’s voice blended with Chase’s as they sang the chorus together.

Talk to me, Talk to my heart

Tell me all you want to say

Ask me all you want to know

Talk to me, Talk to my heart

She loosened up and began dancing to the music. She looked at Chase, and he smiled back at her, copying her cheesy dance moves. She couldn’t help but laugh over her next lines. Chase shook his head at her as he picked up with his part of the song. When he finished his verse, she picked up her lines, and he started laughing again. The crowd went wild, swaying back and forth with their cell phone lights raised above their heads.

They finished out the song, and the crowd burst into applause with hooting and hollering. Cameras flashed, and Lauren realized half the room had filled with paparazzi.

Of course, it had. What were they thinking, putting on such a spectacle?

“Time to go,” Chase whispered in her ear.

“I know the back way out. Follow me.” She took his hand and pulled him behind the stage. There was a side door that led to the outside. Lauren pushed the door open, and they escaped through it.

“Let’s make a run for the car.” He took her hand again, and they let loose across the parking lot, dashing away at full speed. “Get in! Get in!” He fumbled for his keys in his pocket. He found them just as the paparazzi began flooding out of the front of the building. He unlocked the car, and they climbed in. She pulled her seatbelt across her lap, and he cranked up the loud engine.
