“They might. Or they might welcome you back with open arms. Have you considered that maybe they’re just as afraid as you are?”

“You’ll really go over there with me?”

“Right now.”

“Won’t you need to clean up after the event?”

“We can come back and do that.” Lauren wanted to show Chase that she believed in him and that she was there for him through the hard times.

“Let’s go right now then.”

“Do you want to drive?” Lauren asked. “Your car is more fun than mine.”

“Hey, the Explorer is a decent SUV. Don’t knock it.”

They strolled the halls toward the exit and found Chase’s Camaro in the parking lot. Chase opened Lauren’s door, and she climbed in. He got in the driver’s side and let out a loud sigh. “I can’t believe I’m letting you talk me into this.”

“Just rip the band-aid off.”

He white-knuckled the steering wheel. “I think you’re right.” He cranked up the engine and backed out of his parking spot.

He drove across town to one of the wealthier neighborhoods. He took a few turns within the subdivision and pulled up to a three-story brick home. The yard was perfectly landscaped. He shut off the engine and turned to Lauren. “You ready for this?”

She took his hand and squeezed it. “The question is, areyouready?”

“I haven’t been ready for the past ten years. I don’t think I ever will be. But I’m doing it anyway.”

“Let’s go before you change your mind.” Lauren opened her car door and stepped out. She looked down at the white dress Alexis had let her borrow since she’d gone on the blind date. “At least we’re dressed for the part.”

Chase stepped out and closed his car door. “They’re going to think we’re together.”

“So what if they do?” Lauren had already decided she was okay with dating Chase. She just hoped he would have faith in their ability to make this work.

“What if they aren’t home, and I got all worked up for nothing?”

“Then you leave them a note and put it in their mailbox.”

“You’re really not going to let me out of this, are you?”

“Nope. Come on, scaredy-cat.

They made it to the front door, and Lauren counted it as a success. Chase reached up and knocked.

Nothing happened. They waited for about thirty seconds, and then Lauren rang the doorbell.

“I don’t think they’re home,” Chase said.

Then the door opened. The man from all the Remington Law billboards stood before them.

“Hi, Dad.”

Surprise took over his features before his expression hardened. “Chase. What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to invite you to a charity ball I’m performing at tomorrow night. It will be at the Whitmore House.” He pulled a flyer from his pocket and unfolded it. He handed it to his father. “The event is sold out, but I’ll have two tickets waiting for you at the ticket counter should you decide to attend. Alexis will be there as well.”

“She told us you were staying with her.”

“Is Mom here?” Chase looked over his dad’s shoulder like he hoped to catch a glimpse of her behind him.
