“So you’re not used to seeing your sister talking to guys her age.”

“I’m not.”

Owen buttered his biscuit. “Eventually, she might want to settle down. What then?”

“I’ll worry about that when, and if, it ever happens.”

Owen laughed. “You’re hopeless.”

“Just wait until some guy flirts with your little sisters.”

“I’ll kill him.”

“My point exactly.”

“Just to clarify, I wasn’t flirting with Alexis. We were just talking.”

“Oh, sure. I saw you checking out her legs in that red dress.”

“I can’t help it—I have eyes in my head.”

Chase gave him a murderous look, and Owen put his hands up defensively.

“Woah, woah. Chill out, dude.”

“You’ve been warned. You can have any girl you want, but Alexis is off-limits.”

Why did that make him want to pursue her more? He didn’t like being told he couldn’t have something.

“She’s never been in a serious relationship, and I don’t want you messing around with her heart. She’s my baby sister.”

“Isn’t she about twenty-seven?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“She’s proven herself to be a grown woman.”

“And she’s never had her heart broken. You’re just the kind of guy who could crush her heart.”

“I don’t know if I should be offended by that or not.”

“Well, let’s hope we never have to worry about that.”

“Why are we having this conversation? I told you, I’m just friends with Alexis.”

“You’re both in the wedding party. You’ll be spending a lot of time with her. It’s going to be romantic. And she’s painfully single.”

“She doesn’t look like she’s in pain.”

“Let’s hope it stays that way.”

“You’re really serious about this.” Owen leaned back in his chair and folded his arms.

“I am.”

“I’m not going to promise anything. Because it’s unnecessary. I live on the other side of the country from her, and I’m not the type to have a fling.”

“Good.”
