“Nice to meet you, Catherine. I’m here for the wedding and the restaurant I just opened.”
“Oh, yes. Hadley’s. My son took me out to eat there last week,” Sandra said.
“Has he ever taken you to the bake shop across the street?” Owen asked.
“The Icing on Top?” Catherine asked. “Oh, I just love that bakery.”
“It’s even better than Hadley’s,” Owen said.
The women laughed at that.
“You have to try the pink lemonade cupcakes the owner makes. They’re phenomenal,” Owen said.
“I think he’s just sweet on her,” Sandra said to Catherine.
“Well, have you seen her?” Catherine said. “She’s gorgeous. He’d have to be blind not to see that.”
“It seems like every other man in town is blind. I can’t believe the woman is still single after all these years. And with her so pretty too. It’s such a shame.”
Owen didn’t like it that people talked about Alexis like that. “She’s single because she chooses to be.”
“And how do you know so much about what the beautiful Alexis Remington chooses?” Sandra asked with her hands on her hips.
“I’m friends with her.”
“See,” Sandra said, elbowing her friend. “I told you he was sweet on her.”
“Why aren’t you dating her then?” Catherine asked.
Owen hesitated. “I, uh—I don’t think I should be discussing my personal life.”
“Ooh. Now that’s juicy. That only makes me want to hear more,” Sandra said, batting her lashes at him.
“I should get going,” Owen said.
He turned and saw Chase coming toward them.
“It was nice meeting you,” Owen called over his shoulder. “Don’t forget to eat atTheIcing on Top.”
“What is he? A walking advertisement for the girl?” Sandra said.
“She must have him whipped,” he heard Sandra say as he walked toward Chase.
“What was that all about?” Chase asked.
“Just spreading the word about the bakery.”
“Ah, yes,” Chase said. “The big secret plan. How’s that going, by the way?”
“I’m not sure it’s working.”
“What makes you say that?” Chase asked.
“Alexis came over to eat at Hadley’s and saw that I had more desserts on my menu that looked like copycat recipes fromThe Icing on Top.”
“Oh, no. How did that happen?” Chase asked.
“I guess Dave and Vincent did it without my knowledge. It’s taken care of now, but it makes me feel like I’m doing all this work for nothing.”
