“I don’t think it’s for nothing. Alexis told me she’s gotten more traffic in lately.”
“I just don’t know that I have that much sway. And because I’m not telling Alexis what I’m doing, she thinks I’m some big jerk who doesn’t care.”
“But she’ll be angrier with you if she finds out that you’re going around giving her free advertising,” Chase said. “You know how she hates charity.”
“Where are the rest of the guys?” Owen asked.
“They’re checking out an old Corvette. We should see if they want to grab some food. I’m starving.”
“Sounds good to me.” Owen followed Chase in the direction of the Corvette, and soon they saw Benson and Kane talking to a guy who looked to be the owner of the car.
Benson looked up and saw Chase, and Owen waved him over. They ended their conversation with the car owner and headed over to them.
“You guys ready to go grab some food?” Chase asked.
“Definitely,” Benson said. “I’m starved.”
“I thought we could go to that steakhouse over by the hospital. You guys ever been?”
“Not since I was a kid,” Benson said. “My parents used to take me once in a while.”
“Same,” Kane said. “I haven’t been back that much since my parents live in New York. I only come back to see my grandparents occasionally.”
They piled into Chase’s black SUV.
“This car is so nice,” Owen said.
“It smells a lot better than Benson’s truck.”
“Hey,” Benson said. “There’s nothing wrong with Ol’ Bessie.”
“Ol’ Bessie?” Chase said. “Isn’t that the truck you drove in high school?”
“Yep. One and the same.”
“And you can’t afford a new car on the salary you get from the Giants?” Chase said, looking back at them as he pulled out of his parking spot.
“Just because I can afford a new truck doesn’t mean I need one. Not when Bessie is running just fine.”
“Except she smells like a horse’s rear,” Kane said.
Chase and Owen laughed, and Benson folded his arms. “She smells fine. I get one of those little yellow tree air fresheners from the gas station. I hang it on my rearview mirror, and it keeps her smelling real nice.”
“Yeah, right,” Kane said. “I’d rather pay for a taxi than get a free ride with Benson.”
“What are the girls up to today?”
“They’re doing a spa day,” Chase said.
“I could use a spa day,” Kane said. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a massage.”
“I wouldn’t mind some hot chick putting her hands all over me,” Benson said wistfully.
“You could try getting a girlfriend,” Owen said.
“You talking from experience?” Benson said. “Is Chase’s sister putting her hands all over you?”
“Whoa, whoa,” Chase interjected. “We’re so not going there.”
