“How do you know Owen so well?” Alexis asked.

Sariah shrugged. “We were friends in high school.”

“I guess I can see that. I was a couple of years behind you guys, so I wasn’t super aware of who hung out with each other in your graduating class.”

“We didn’t date or anything, but I ate at his lunch table.”

“Owen could have changed over the years.”

“I don’t think so, but I do know he’s a really great guy. At least he was back in high school.”

“He’s still a great guy,” Lauren said, returning to their group.

One of the spa employees led them back to a relaxation room where comfy chairs surrounded a crackling fire. The girls each found a seat, keeping their voices low.

“He is a really great guy,” Alexis whispered. “But I’m not sure whatever we have is quite to that level,” Alexis said.

“What about for you?” Tessa asked. “How do you feel about things?”

“I think I’m falling for him.” She covered a hand over her mouth. “I can’t believe I’m admitting this to you guys.”

“You can trust us, Alexis,” Lauren said.

“We can keep this confidential,” Carrington assured her.

“What happens on spa day, stays on spa day,” Sariah said.

“I’m just so scared he doesn’t feel the same way,” Alexis admitted.

Lauren squeezed her hand. “Either way, know that you’re a beautiful, strong, capable woman who deserves the very best.”

“It’s true,” Tessa nodded.

“I couldn’t have said it better myself,” Carrington agreed.

“She’s right,” Sariah said.

“Aww, thanks, guys. But this is supposed to be your day, Lauren, and I feel like everyone’s focusing on me.”

“I’ve already found my happily ever after,” Lauren said. “I want to see the same happen for you.”

“I don’t know that I’ll ever get that lucky. But if it were going to be with anyone, I’d want it to be Owen.” Alexis put a hand to her mouth. “Guys, I really like him. I mean, I have for a long time. But it’s different now.”

“When you’re with him, do you get the impression that he feels the same way about you?” Sariah asked.

“Yes, but that could just be wishful thinking.”

“I saw you together,” Tessa said. “He’s definitely interested. Big time.”

“It does feel like he’s serious about us. But I know he can’t give up his career. I wouldn’t want him to.”

“You’ll figure everything out,” Lauren said. “I know you will.”

Alexis chewed on the side of her cuticle. “I wish I could be as sure as you, but I have so many doubts. Nothing this good has ever happened to me, and it feels like it’s about to disappear at any moment.”

“What about your bakery?” Tessa said. “You worked hard and were able to start it up just like you always dreamed. That’s proof right there that good thingsdohappen for you. So why can’t you end up with your happy ending with Owen?”

“I just don’t want to get my hopes up, that’s all.”
