“Are you okay?” Kane came up behind him.

Owen spun around. “Yeah, I’m all right.”

Kane gave him a disbelieving look. “You don’t seem it.”

“Alexis and I broke up last night.”

“Ouch. What happened?”

Owen glanced around to be sure they weren’t overheard. He pulled Kane into the laundry room. “We live on opposite ends of the country.”

“But you knew that going into this.”

“I wasn’t expecting it to get so serious so fast.”

“Chase was warning you.”

“Don’t tell him anything about this. I don’t want to ruin his wedding with my problems.”

“Too late,” Chase said, coming around the corner. “I’ve already heard.”

“Chase.” Owen looked at him with an apologetic look. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want it to happen this way.”

A dark look crossed Chase’s features. “So, you crushed my sister’s heart right before my wedding?”

“I asked her to come to California with me.”

“And let me guess, she said no.”

“You guessed right.” Owen stared at him without blinking.

“She would never give up her bakery, and you knew that.”

“I didn’t know that. I figured she might change her mind.”

“Then you don’t know my sister very well. She loves her bakery, and she’s the most stubborn person I know. She doesn’t change her mind often.”

Lauren came around the corner and looked between the three of them. “What’s going on?”

“Alexis and Owen broke up last night,” Kane said.

“Oh no, I’m so sorry, Owen.”

“It’s okay. It couldn’t be helped.”

“Where’s Alexis?” Lauren asked, looking around the kitchen from over her shoulder. “Has anyone seen her?”

“She’s in the pool with Sariah and Carrington,” Chase said.

“Did she look okay?”

“I wasn’t really paying attention,” Chase said. “I didn’t know to look.”

“I’m going to go check on her,” Lauren said.

“That’s so like Lauren,” Chase said, looking longingly after his fiancée. “She’s always caring about others more than herself.”

“You have a good woman,” Kane said.
