“What? You think I should give up my bakery?”
“Couldn’t you start another bakery near him?”
“I—” Alexis’s words stuck in her throat. “That would be so much work.”
“But you already know how to do it.”
Alexis’s mind swirled at the thought. But she rejected it immediately. She threw her shoulders back. “I just need to realize that what Owen and I had was great while it lasted, but that it’s over now.”
Tessa groaned. “Oh, come on, Alexis.”
Alexis stood up. “I’m going to see how Lauren’s hair is coming along.”
She crossed the room to Lauren. “That looks gorgeous, sweetheart.”
Lauren beamed up at Alexis, and her eyes lit up. “Thank you. I think it’s turning out perfect.” Lauren was glowing, such a happy bride. Something Alexis would probably never experience.
Rita put the finishing touches on Lauren’s hair, and all the bridesmaids oohed and ahhed.
“You look fabulous,” Carrington squealed, clapping her hands.
“Rita, you’re a true artist,” Alexis said. “Nicely done.”
“Thanks, girl.”
Alexis knew Rita well since her bakery was next door to Lauren’s salon. She was always bringing over cupcakes for them to try. Rita gave great cooking advice. She always knew exactly what Alexis’s recipes needed. It was too bad Lauren had her working at the salon, or Alexis would have offered her a job at the bakery.
Aubrey Wheaton came upstairs with a clipboard. “How’s everything going?”
“I’ve just finished her hair,” Rita said.
“Great,” Aubrey said.
“How’s the press situation downstairs?” Alexis asked.
“We only have certain reporters allowed on the property. Everything’s under control.”
“That’s a relief.”
“You have ten minutes before you ladies will need to head downstairs.”
“Thanks, Aubrey.” Alexis stood and smoothed her coral bridesmaid dress.
“Knock, knock?” Maggie, Lauren’s twin sister, stood at the door. “Look who’s here to see you.” She stood with Lauren’s five-year-old daughter, Penny.
“Hi, Mommy!” Penny twirled. “Look at my flower-girl dress!” She held out the coral dress that matched the dress Alexis wore.
“You look beautiful, honey.” Lauren kissed the top of her daughter’s head.
“Is Chase going to be my new daddy today?”
“That’s right, and you’re a very lucky girl to have him.”
“I get to throw down all the flower petals. Aunt Maggie showed me how.”
“Thanks, Maggie.” Lauren threw Maggie a grateful smile.
“You’re going to be the best flower girl ever,” Alexis told her.
