“Chase only helped put in a good word for you. You landed that role all on your own.”
“But I never would have gotten that audition were it not for Chase. We both know that’s true.”
“Chase has been a good friend to you over the years.”
“He has. Just like you’ve been a good friend to Lauren.”
“I don’t know what I’m going to do without her living across the hall from me anymore.”
“You don’t think you can talk Chase into moving into her apartment with her?” Owen teased.
“Not when he’s bought an enormous house on the outskirts of town.”
“You have a good point there.”
“Have you been out there yet?” Alexis asked.
“Not yet. I hear it’s nice, though.”
“It’s a great house. I hope they fill it full of nieces and nephews for me.”
Owen laughed. “That might take a while.”
Alexis took a rag and wiped a few crumbs from the counter. “Not as long as you might think. I have a sneaky suspicion that Lauren and Chase are baby hungry.”
“Well, that would be good news for Penny,” Owen said, referring to Lauren’s five-year-old daughter.
“I think she’s desperate for a baby brother or sister.”
“Well, I hope she gets one.” Owen stood up, crumpling his trash and tossing it into the garbage. “I’ve got to run. Thanks for the nice break from work.”
“Have a great day.”
He waved over his shoulder as he left and crossed the street back to his restaurant. She still couldn’t believe she was so oblivious to the fact that he’d been Hadley’s owner all this time.
“Well, that was interesting,” Delilah said.
“What was?” Alexis turned to her. She’d almost forgotten Delilah had been standing there the entire time.
“You and Owen.”
“What about us.”
“You like each other.”
Had she been that obvious? “What do you mean?” She had noticed no attraction on his part.
“I saw you guys checking each other out.”
She blushed. Had Owen been checking her out? She hadn’t noticed that. “We weren’t doing any such thing. Owen and I are just friends. If you can even call us that. If he keeps stealing my business, we’ll be enemies.”
“Yeah . . . that could get awkward fast. Do you think he realizes you’ve been losing customers to his restaurant?”
“How could he know that?”
Delilah shrugged. “We just need to work hard to keep the customers that we still have.”
“My thoughts exactly.” Alexis checked her watch. “I’m going to head upstairs. You’re here until five, right?”
