“Sometimes. Mostly just with Netflix. I tend to be a bit more old-fashioned at times. Like with Ol’ Bessie.”
“Yeah, I don’t get that. Why are you still driving that old truck?”
“There’s nothing wrong with her. She still runs great. She’s been there by my side for a long time. Why get rid of her when she doesn’t deserve it?”
Tessa laughed. “You make her sound like a person.”
He smiled broadly. “She’s one of a kind.”
“Okay. Time for another question.”
“Go ahead.”
“Do you smoke?”
“Nope.”
“Drink a lot?”
“Only occasionally.”
“Somehow I don’t believe that.”
“I may get into trouble because of drinking once in a while, but that doesn’t mean I’m an alcoholic or anything.”
“Do you drink in the house a lot?”
“Once in a while. I mostly go out if I’m going to drink.”
“What do you like to do for fun?”
“Other than the stuff I already told you? Let’s see. I mostly live and breathe sports. But you probably already know that. I like watching sports when I’m not playing them. Or going to sports bars and watching the game with my buddies there. How do you feel about sports?”
“I like them. I wasn’t ever very good at them, but I don’t mind sitting down to watch a game of football. I have to attend a lot of sporting events as a reporter. It’s my favorite part of my job.”
“Have you ever thought about becoming a sports reporter?”
“Definitely. But I’ve never had the opportunity. I’ve always been stuck in Maple Creek, caring for my mom.”
“Does your mom have other people there for her who could help her?”
“Her sister lives in town. She could come over and check on her.”
“That’s good,” Benson said. “What kind of sports do you enjoy writing about the most?”
“Probably football or basketball. Baseball too.”
“You’ll fit in with my buddies really well then.”
“You’re saying it like it’s a sure thing that I’m marrying you.”
“I’m beginning to think you’re leaning in that direction.”
“Well, I have to admit, the interview’s going better than I expected.”
“That’s good to hear. What were you expecting?”
“I don’t know. I guess I was worried that you were a huge slob. I couldn’t live in a place like that. I just think of you as this football player, and somehow that equates to messy dude in my mind.”
