“Those weren’t really problems. The key being stuck in the ignition wasn’t that much of an issue. All I had to do was tap the ignition with a hammer, and it would start right up. Nobody knew how to steal that old truck because they didn’t know how to start it. It’s like a built-in anti-theft device. I’m pretty sure that no one knew the finish hammer in the middle seat was used to start the truck. They’d just think it was broken down and would move on to someone else’s truck.”
“I remember you asked me to drive it one time, and I couldn’t figure out how to start it.”
“It takes a gentle touch. Ol’ Bessie can be a little particular. If you hit it too hard, she goes past the point of no return. If you hit it too little, she won’t hit the right wire to spark the ignition. You had to hit it exactly right to get it to fire up.”
“I can’t believe you’re still driving that truck when you can afford to get a new one.”
“There’s nothing wrong with Ol’ Bessie. Why wouldn’t I be driving her? She runs just fine.”
“The tabloids seem to think it’s crazy, so it’s not just me who’s saying it.”
“I try to avoid hearing what the tabloids have to say about me,” Benson said.
“I can understand that,” Chase said. “What does your agent think about your antics with Ol’ Bessie at Central Park?”
“He wants me to get married.”
“Married, huh?” Chase laughed. “And what did you say to that?”
“I’m not happy about it.”
“That’s not a big surprise. Who’s the lucky girl?” Chase asked.
“I have no idea. But I have to find her before the end of the week.”
“They aren’t giving you much time.” Chase had an excited spark in his eyes.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Benson grumbled.
“You have to admit it’s funny. You’re the guy who always says you don’t want to get married.”
“I don’t think it’s very funny. I’m kind of freaking out here.”
“You’ll figure it out. You always do. You’re the mighty Benson Patrick.”
“Whatever you say.” Benson frowned.
“Let’s go over your options.”
“He wants me to find a girl from Maple Creek,” Benson said.
“Even better! Now I know all the choices.”
“You don’t need to get so excited about this. My life is falling apart right now.”
“Oh, come on, Benson. You know as well as the rest of us that it’s well past time for you to settle down.”
Benson refused to meet Chase’s animated gaze. “I was perfectly happy with the way things were.”
“What’s going on?” Kane came up to them.
“We need to find a wife for Benson.”
“You’re welcome to have mine. She’s driving me up the wall,” Kane said.
“No. I’m being serious,” Chase said.
Benson filled Kane in on what was going on.
