“I can’t believe we got the Whitmore House!” Tessa said.
“That’s great news.”
“I didn’t think it would happen. I’d given up hope.”
“I’m glad you’re getting the wedding you’ve always dreamed of. I’m sorry I’m not the guy you’ve dreamed of.”
He glanced over at Tessa. She was looking away from him. Did it bother her?
She must have felt his gaze on her because she turned and looked at him. “Hey, you’re not so bad.”
“You think you can tolerate me?”
“I’ve been tolerating you for the last couple of weeks. So far, so good.”
Benson chuckled. He pulled into Chase’s driveway and parked in front of the garage. “This place is gorgeous,” Tessa said.
“You’ve never been here before?” Benson asked.
“Nope.”
“He has horses too?” Tessa squealed, looking over at the pasture where two mares stood.
“I think those are new,” Benson said. “I don’t remember seeing them before.”
“How nice,” Tessa said.
“Do you ride?” Benson asked her.
“No. But I’d love to.”
“I used to ride horses growing up. My parents had some property out in the country.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“We should see if Chase will let us ride his horses sometime.”
“Really? I’d love that.”
The front door pushed open, and Lauren stepped out onto the front porch. They had a huge space there, and it was lined with rocking chairs. It was a perfect place to watch the sunset. “Hey, you two!” Lauren called to them.
“Do you think she knows?” Tessa whispered to Benson.
“I have no clue.”
“I don’t know what to say to her. Should we just tell her the truth?”
“I wouldn’t unless she seems to know already. I’d watch for some indication that she knows the truth.”
“Fair enough,” Tessa said.
Benson walked with Tessa up to greet Lauren on the front porch.
“Come on in,” Lauren said. “I hope you guys are hungry. I cooked up some food for us.”
“That’s so nice of you,” Tessa said. “What did you make?”
“Roasted chicken and garlic potatoes.”
