She gave Tessa a wide smile, revealing crooked teeth. “Benson sure is lucky to have a girl like you.”

“Why do you say that?” Tessa asked.

“Well, after what happened with his first wedding, I’m sure he appreciates you sticking around.”

“His first wedding?”

“Oh yes, to that Megan girl. I just heard a couple of his friends talking about it. I don’t think they knew I could hear them though. They were being a bit secretive about it.”

“He was married before?”

“No, no. She left him at the altar. Didn’t you know?”

“Oh.” Tessa couldn’t believe it. What had happened between Benson and Megan that would cause her to leave him at the altar? Had he done something to run her off?

“He never told you, did he? I can’t believe he would keep something like that secret from you.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Wheaton. I have to go.”

Tessa stalked off, cracking the seal on her water bottle. If she heard one more word of that conversation, she was going to burst into tears. She took a long drink from her water and then whirled around, stumbling right into Benson’s arms.
