“What’s this opportunity? Is it a job?” She sounded eager about the job idea.

“Sort of. Are you looking for a new job?”

Tessa’s cheeks turned pink. She was cute when she was embarrassed. “It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember to get a job in New York City with a large publication. I was wondering if you’d be interested in giving me an interview. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I’m hoping it could help me land a job outside of Maple Creek.”

“An interview, huh?”

“Yep.” Hope shone in her eyes.

“I’m not so sure about that. I can’t just have interviews without talking to my agent. There’s a process here. Protocols.” There weren’t really protocols. He’d just made that up. But he didn’t want Tessa to think she had it that easy.

Tessa frowned. “Oh, I see. Well, thanks anyway.”

“I might be able to make an exception.”

“I’m listening.”

“So you want to work for a big city newspaper?” An idea began to formulate in Benson’s mind. This could work out to his advantage.

“Yep. Is that what you wanted to talk to me about?”

He led her to the garden area behind the mansion. “I’m dealing with a bit of a difficult situation right now.”

“What’s going on?”

“I got in trouble with my coach because I was caught doing donuts in Central Park in my truck.”

“Ol’ Bessie?”

“You know about that?”

She rolled her eyes. “Everybody knows about that.”

“They do?”

“You were even featured in one of those off-roading magazines as a joke.”

“How did you know about the off-road magazine? I just found out about that last week.”

“Hey, I have to stay informed. I’m a newspaper reporter,” Tessa said. “So what does you spinning donuts have to do with the proposition you have for me? Or whatever it is you wanted to talk to me about.”

“I need a wife.”

“I’m sorry. What was that?” Tessa stopped walking and stared at him like she hadn’t heard him right. “I must be going crazy because it sounded like you said you need a wife.”

“That is what I said.”
