“It’s not that I don’t want to fight. It’s that I don’t know if I can win.”
“What do you mean by that?” Tessa made a face. “You can be a very confusing person.”
“I can’t explain it.”
“Why not?” Tessa complained.
“Because I don’t want to hurt you.”
“So you know why, but you’re just choosing to keep it to yourself.”
“Can we talk about something else?” Benson asked.
“What would you like to talk about?” Tessa said. “I know. You can tell me what we’re planning to do tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, we’re going horseback riding and hiking to a waterfall with a swimming hole.”
“Tomorrow is horseback riding? How exciting.”
“I thought you’d be happy to hear that.”
Tessa was glad that Benson had suggested that they change the subject. She didn’t want to argue with him, but it was eating her up inside that he wasn’t willing to be more open with her. She wasn’t used to so much secrecy. Her mom usually talked to her openly about things.
Benson had said that he was afraid of hurting her. What could he mean by that? Maybe she was better off not knowing. But she still ached to learn the truth behind his words. It seemed like the key to her happiness and not knowing what it was might eat her alive. Maybe she just needed to have more patience with Benson. They still had another three years together to figure things out.
In the meantime, she was going to make the most of what was left of her honeymoon. She didn’t want to spend her time in the Caribbean fighting with Benson. She wanted to have fun and enjoy the sights. Go on adventures.
Maybe relaxing and letting go was the way to get what she wanted. Maybe the pieces would fall into place on their own if she could only learn to be still and allow things to be how they were supposed to be. It was just so hard to give up control.
