“I don’t see shrimp with pasta, but they do have it with rice,” Tessa said. “Maybe I’ll get that.”

“Are you sure? We could go to the other restaurant if you want.”

“No. We’ve already ordered our drinks here. I’ll be fine.”

“Only if you’re sure.”

She smiled at him. “I’m sure.”

This restaurant served traditional Caribbean food. Tessa loved looking over the menu to see what was offered. It all looked so exotic.

The server came back with their drinks and took their order, and then Tessa and Benson handed him their menus. Tessa looked out onto the beach where the waves were crashing onto the sand. Sadness overwhelmed her. Her trip had been filled with so much happiness, and after reading just a few text messages, it was all destroyed for her.

“Are you okay?” Benson asked her.

“I’m fine.” She couldn’t meet his eye.

“You don’t seem fine.”

Why did his voice have to sound so gentle? It made her fall even harder for him, and she didn’t want to. Having feelings for Benson would only lead to heartbreak. She didn’t want to spend their marriage this way.

“What’s going on?” Benson asked.

Tears started forming in her eyes.

“Did something happen?”

She nodded.

He took her hand. “What is it?”

“I did something stupid.”

“What did you do?”

“I read your phone while you were in the shower.”

“You what?”

“I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. But I’m just so nosy I couldn’t help myself.”

Benson’s voice became guarded. “What did you see?”

“You got a text from Gus, and your phone was buzzing against my leg. I picked up your phone, and it swiped it open. I didn’t mean to read it. But I saw that he was asking how you were holding up, and then I saw my name in the above conversation.”

“What did I say? I don’t even remember.”

“You told Gus you still have feelings for Megan.”

Benson went very still. “Tessa…”

“Have you been putting on an act with me this whole time?” Tessa asked.

“Tessa, no.”

Her tears started flowing then. They spilled from her eyes and ran down her cheeks.

“What do you want me to say? She left me at the altar. She was supposed to be my wife.”
