“I’ve been to your house. You’re not all that bad.” He’d been to her home a few times when they were planning the wedding.
“My house is spotless compared to my mom’s.”
“My parents taught me to be tidy. That was one of the few things that stuck.”
“I’m sure that’s not true. You’re a good person. I’m sure you learned that from them. They seem nice.”
“That’s sweet of you to say. Both my parents are great people. It’s good to hear that someone thinks they raised me right. I’m sure they would appreciate hearing that.”
“I’ll be sure to let them know the next time I see them.”
“What are we going to do?” Benson asked.
“About?”
“About us.”
Tessa’s mouth turned downward. “I don’t know yet. Let’s just take it one day at a time. Right now, I want to focus on getting moved in and preparing for my job interview.”
“I can accept that.”
“Do you want to show me the rest of your place?” Tessa asked.
“It’s our place now. If you want it to be.”
“I’d like that.”
“The only thing left is the deck area.”
“Let’s go see it.”
He led her back downstairs toward the living room. He pushed open the sliding glass door, and they stepped out onto the balcony.
“Look at this view,” Tessa breathed. “It’s gorgeous.”
“That was what made me want the place.”
“Is this a hot tub?” She walked over to it.
“Yes.”
“Impressive. How did you get this thing up here?”
“Very carefully. I hired a company to do it for me.”
“I guess when you’re a quarterback for the New York Giants, you can have a hot tub on your balcony.”
“Yes, you can.”
“I can’t take this job from you, Benson.”
“I can’t expect you to stay in a situation where you were unhappy.”
“I’m not unhappy. I’m hurting.”
Benson wanted to take this woman in his arms and kiss away all her pain. He hated himself for not figuring out his issues before Tessa had found out about them. All of this was his fault.
“When I told you before that I was glad it was you on the honeymoon and not Megan, I meant it.”
