Jessilyn
We finished our dinner, and Bennett paid our bill.
“Do you want to go sit in my car with me for a little bit?” he asked.
“Sure.”
“It’s not the fanciest car, but it can still go fast.”
“Well, it is a Mustang,” I pointed out as we got to his car. “Aren’t these known for going fast?”
He opened my door for me. “That’s why I got it.”
I laughed. I could totally picture Bennett hot-rodding it. It would be so fun to ride around with him hitting the gas pedal hard. I had a feeling I was going to like being his girlfriend. He seemed like the kind of guy who treated people well.
He climbed into the driver’s seat. It was cozy being here with Bennett. And thrilling. I’d never had a boyfriend before. There was something exciting about knowing that my family wouldn’t approve of him. It wasn’t like me to ever break out of the mold of being the perfect, obedient daughter. But now that I’d broken out of it, I saw how boring it had been before. I’d never felt more alive than I did at this moment.
Bennett reached out and took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine. I looked down at our hands, and a smile grew over my face. I looked up at him, and his eyes met mine. He smiled back at me.
“This is nice,” I said.
He cranked on his engine and hooked his phone up to the stereo.
“What kind of music do you like?” he asked.
“I like everything.” My playlists were full of a wide variety of music.
“How about this?” An acoustic song played over his speakers that I hadn’t heard before.
“This is the perfect chill-out song,” I said. The lead singer, a female, had a laid-back sound.
“It’s from an indie band I really like.”
“I’ve never listened to any indie music,” I admitted.
“You’re missing out on some pretty great stuff.”
“You’ll have to show me what I’ve been missing out on then.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Now that, I can do.”
I felt a blush creeping over my face. For some reason, I didn’t think he was talking about music anymore.
“Will you go to prom with me? You don’t already have a date, do you?”
“I was just going to go with Reese. If I decide to go to prom with you, then Jackilyn will find out we’re together.”
“That’s true. If you don’t want to go with me, I understand.”
“I’ll think about it, and I’ll let you know,” I said.
Bennett stared into my eyes, his gaze intense. “You’re so beautiful.” He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.
My breath caught. A chill chased down my body at his touch. I could get lost in his blue eyes.
He leaned toward me and brushed his thumb across my cheek. Then he brought his lips close and gently pressed them to mine. A small gasp caught in my throat. He felt like heaven. He kissed me like I was someone to be cherished and honored. I kissed him back, pulling him in closer to me. He combed his fingers through my hair with so much tenderness. I’d never felt so appreciated, so valued.
