“You’re not getting punished,” Mom said. “We just see an opportunity to help you that we didn’t necessarily have with Jackilyn.”

“Bennett asked me to prom,” I blurted. I thrust my chin forward. “I think I’m going to tell him yes.” It wasn’t like avoiding prom was going to do anything at this point. Jackilyn already knew we were together.

My parents both got quiet. Then my mom spoke. “I see. You’re determined to date this boy, aren’t you?”

“I don’t see anything wrong with it. We like each other. Why shouldn’t we be together?”

“You don’t think it’s a little inconsiderate toward your sister?” my dad asked.

I sighed. “Jackilyn’s the one who dumped him. If she wanted him, she would have stayed together with him.”

My mom’s lips pressed together into a thin line. “I didn’t realize she was the one who ended the relationship.”

“I’m not surprised to hear that,” I said. “She probably tried to make it sound like I’d stolen him from her.”

“She did make it sound that way,” Mom said.

“So can I go to prom with Bennett?”

“I don’t like it,” my dad said. “But I’m not going to stop you from going with him.”

My face fell. I hated it when my parents weren’t pleased with me. It killed me inside to see that disappointed look on my dad’s face. It was like he thought I’d failed him.

It should have felt like a victory that my parents were giving me permission to go to prom with Bennett, but all I could think about was how much I’d let them down.
