Jessilyn pulled me over to the large, white marble fireplace. She stood in front of me, and I put my arms around her waist. Jackilyn and Kellen posed beside us.

Mrs. Martin snapped a few pictures, and then we did some shots individually as couples. When it was our turn, Jessilyn twisted around to whisper to me. “Thank you for asking me. I’ve never had a date to a dance like this before.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Never?” That hardly seemed likely.

“Nope. It’s always been Jackilyn getting all the pictures taken.”

I smiled down at her. With her this close to me, I could smell the sweet, fruity scent of her shampoo.

When we were all finished with the pictures, we said goodbye to her parents, and then I took her out to dinner at Charter, the fanciest restaurant in town. I’d never been there, but Uncle Ryan’s lady friend Sasha had insisted that I had to take Jessilyn there. Apparently, it was the place to go before prom and had been for a long time. I didn’t care about what was trendy in Sweet Mountain, but I wanted Jessilyn to have the best prom experience possible.

It was bad enough that her parents didn’t approve of me. That alone was enough to cause her to bolt at any moment.

After our dinner, I drove Jessilyn to the Victoria Hotel, the venue where prom was being held this year. I’d never been to the fancy building before. Jessilyn and I walked into the crowded ballroom. A disco ball hung from the ceiling, and the dance floor was packed with bodies swaying to the music.

Jessilyn’s face lit up. “This is amazing! Everything looks so pretty!”

I loved seeing how excited she was. She looped her arm through mine.

The music changed, and a slow song came on. Zayn and Milla headed out onto the dance floor, looking happy and in love.

“Let’s dance,” Jessilyn said, tugging me toward the middle of the room.

She didn’t have to ask me twice. I was more than willing to dance with her. She draped her arms around my neck, and I pulled her waist close to mine as we began swaying with the music. She smiled up at me. “This has been such a great night. I can’t believe you took me to Charter.”

“Was that your first time going there?”

“No, my parents take me there sometimes, but I love it.”

It had cost a pretty penny for me to take her there, but she was worth it. She deserved to go to nice restaurants like Charter. I held her close to me and enjoyed the sway of the music.

The song ended, and we walked to the side where some tables were set up. Reese came up to Jessilyn. She wore a long peach dress, and her hair was curled. She had on more makeup than normal, too, and I hardly recognized her.

“Oh my gosh!” Reese took Jessilyn’s hands. “You look gorgeous! I can’t believe you and Bennett are dating now. You two are adorable together.”

“Thanks! You look great too.”

“Would you like me to get you a drink?” I asked Jessilyn.

“Sure, some punch would be great. Or whatever they have over there.”

“I’ll be right back.” I kissed her on the cheek. As I walked away, I could hear Reese squealing about how adorable that was.

I headed over to the punch table, and the teacher working the drink station filled two clear plastic cups with the red liquid and handed them over to me.

“Thanks, Mrs. Drake.”

“No problem, Bennett. Have a fun night.”

I headed over to Jessilyn, but Jackilyn stepped into my path. “What are you doing?” I asked her.

“How nice of you to bring me a drink.” She snatched one of the cups from my hand and took a sip. “I was getting thirsty.”

“That was for Jessilyn.”

“Oh, oops. Don’t worry, she won’t mind.”

“What do you want, Jackilyn?” I looked past her to where Jessilyn was standing, but I couldn’t see her through the crowd.
