“Do you want to spend the night?”
“Only if you let me eat some of your ice cream.”
“Deal.”
“Your parents are probably going to be so happy to see you coming home before curfew with me that they’ll forget to question you about why you’re home early.”
“A girl can wish, right?”
Reese laughed.
It felt great to have a girls’ night with her. That was all prom was supposed to be for me originally, and then I’d ditched her for Bennett. Had that been a mistake?
We pulled up to my house and climbed out of the car. “Think we should try to sneak in, or just walk through the front door like nothing is wrong?”
“Walk through like nothing’s wrong,” Reese said. “But I think you should tell your mom and dad what happened with Bennett.”
“And have them throw it back in my face that they were right that it was a bad idea to date him?”
“So what if they do? At least you’ll have your parents behind you when you aren’t feeling well.”
That was a good point. Maybe I just needed to swallow my pride. “Okay. Let’s go in.” I twisted the door, but it was locked. “Great.” I didn’t have a key.
“Looks like we’re ringing the doorbell,” Reese said.
I pressed the button, and my mom came to the door. “You’re back early.”
“We had a problem,” I told her.
“What’s wrong?” She wiped at my face. “Your pretty makeup is all smeared. Have you been crying?”
The words poured from me all at once. “Bennett went to get me a drink, and instead of coming back to give it to me, he asked Jackilyn to dance and then kissed her.”
“What?” She pulled me to her. “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry.”
“But he says she was the one who came onto him. I don’t know who to believe,” I wailed. “And even if she was the one who went after him, he still let her kiss him.”
“Jackilyn can be a determined girl. It’s possible she didn’t give him much choice.”
“Mom, he didn’t have to dance with her. Why did he put himself in that situation in the first place?”
“I don’t know, honey. I wasn’t there. But I do know that your sister likes to stir up trouble. Don’t underestimate her.”
She had a good point. “Is it okay if Reese stays the night? We bought ice cream, and I feel like eating my feelings right now.”
“Of course, she can stay. Reese is always welcome here.”
“Thanks, Mom. We’re going to head up to my room. I want to change into my jammies.”
“Okay. Have fun, girls.”
I led Reese up the stairs to my room and pulled out a couple of pairs of pajamas. I tossed one of them to her.
“Thanks.” She took it and went into my bathroom to change. I set the bag with the ice cream on my dresser and changed into my pajamas, and then I grabbed a makeup wipe and cleaned the gunk off my face.
My phone rang. I flipped my phone over on my dresser and saw Bennett’s face flash up on the screen. He was the last person I wanted to talk to right now. I was just starting to feel better. My ice cream was calling my name, so I didn’t answer Bennett’s call, and he texted instead.
Bennett:I feel horrible about what happened. Please believe me that I didn’t know she was going to kiss me like that. She completely caught me off guard.
