“Kellen was picking on Colby? Why? He’s such a sweet kid.”

“Kellen’s a jerk. He treats Jackilyn awful too. The truth is, Bennett is a great guy. He’s planning on opening his own mechanic shop one day. He’s had a super tough life. His mom died when he was young, and his dad has struggled with alcohol as a result. None of that was Bennett’s fault. We can’t blame him for that. He’s been working hard to hold everything together. You don’t often find a guy this great who’s been through so much.”

“I had no idea,” my mom said.

“Because you judged him based on what his angry, jealous ex had to say about him. When is that ever going to be a fair representation?” I said.

My dad’s eyebrows rose. “You do have a good point there. Jackilyn probably wasn’t the most reliable source of information on Bennett’s character.”

“It helps to hear all this from you, Jessilyn,” Mom said. “You should have told us all this earlier.”

“I didn’t think you would listen.”

“Well, we’re listening now,” Dad said. “He really does make you happy, doesn’t he?”

“Yes.”

“Jackilyn’s in a lot of trouble for the behavior she has shown toward you and Bennett. I don’t know how we’ll ever be able to get through to her.”

“At least she apologized,” I said. “I guess she didn’t take my relationship with Bennett seriously.”

“Well, we’re taking it seriously,” Dad said. “We can tell that you are.”

“If you really want to date this boy, then you have our support,” Mom said.

“I can agree with that,” Dad said.

“Why don’t you have Bennett over some time so we can get to know him better?” Mom suggested. “You had all these practices with him, but you didn’t bring him here to do it.”

If it hadn’t been for Jackilyn getting so upset, then I would have. And then they would have had a better chance to get to know Bennett. But we had the future to remedy that.

I just hoped we could win that Drama Competition.
