She opened the glass case and scooped out the sweet treat, plopping it onto a cone. She handed it to him.
“And what do you want?” Kenzie asked Sully.
“Strawberry cheesecake. Two scoops in a cone.”
Jackson looked over at her. “Strawberry cheesecake?”
“Yep. It has graham cracker crust swirled in it. It’s pretty amazing,” Sully told him.
“I’ll have to try some,” Jackson said.
“I can get you a sample,” Kenzie offered, once she’d handed Sully her cone.
“Sure.”
She took a tiny spoon and dug out a little clump of ice cream for him. He tried it, and the tangy flavor of strawberries and cheesecake filled his mouth. “This is really good.”
Sully grinned at him, and he felt his heart warm in his chest. This woman was pulling him in ever deeper.
“So the two of you together?” Ella looked between them.
“Yes. We’re dating now,” Sully told her.
“There are a lot of girls at school who would be very jealous of you,” Kenzie pointed out.
Jackson didn’t want to think too much about that. Those girls could get him in big trouble. He had to be very careful about keeping things strictly professional with his students.
“Those girls are way too young for Jackson,” Sully reminded her.
“You think they care about that?” Kenzie laughed. “They have crushes on celebrities and all of them are too old.”
“I guess you have a point,” Sully said.
Jackson kept his mouth shut. It was better that way. There wasn’t anything he could say to make this situation better.
“All I’m saying is, you’re one lucky girl,” Ella said.
It was on the tip of Jackson’s tongue to correct Ella and tell her they weren’t actually a couple, but that would blow their cover.
“Oh, by the way,” Kenzie said. “Your ex came in here earlier today looking for you. I almost called the police, but he left when he found out it was your day off.”
Sully’s face went pale.
“Yep,” Jackson said. “It’s definitely time to get some cameras in here. Having them at your house isn’t enough. That way, if Mason comes here to mess with anything, you’ll have proof.”
“Do you think he might try something to sabotage the place?” Sully asked him, eyes wide with fear.
“If he does, make sure you have footage of it so you can provide it for the police department.”
“You’re right.”
“I’d be willing to help you install them,” he offered.
“You’ve already done so much,” Sully said. “I hate to ask you for something more.”
“I don’t mind at all. I’m happy to make things safer for you.”
Her eyes went all tender, and it made him bust out dance moves inside. You know, like a victory dance. Because if he could make her look that way at him, it was something to celebrate.
