Sully walked beside him on their way to his house. “Sounds good to me.”

They stashed the bag of critters in the bushes along with the Halloween sound machine and fake spiders. They’d put batteries in it when they’d gotten to Jackson’s house, and it was ready to do its spooky job.

They made a trip back to the truck for the ladder, and they carried it together.

“Do you think anyone will see us?” Sully asked, nervousness building inside her at the idea. “We look a little suspicious, carrying around a ladder in the middle of the night.”

Jackson adjusted his hold on the ladder and even in the moonlight, his shoulders rippled in a really nice way. “Nah, I’m sure they’ll think we’re just night owls who love doing house repairs.”

Her shoulder hurt from where the ladder rested on her, but the view ahead of her made all this worth it. “What will we tell people if we do get caught?”

“We’ll just have to make sure no one sees us,” Jackson said.

“Oh, right. I’ll be sure to drink my invisibility potion I picked up from the Halloween store.” It would have been helpful if they’d had those. She’d just have to settle for sneaking. At least she’d worn all black.

There was a chance she might get caught, but she had to take it. This was the only way to get Mason to leave. Maybe if she didn’t focus too much on the idea that her abusive ex was up there, she’d be okay.
