“We fell in the mud, Mom. And then we might have gotten into a mud fight…”

“Ahh, young love. It’s a little strange, but whatever.” She gives me a wide grin. “As long as you two get married and give me lots of grandbabies, I’ll accept it.”

My chest gets tight at her words, but I try not to show it. I know she’s trying to make a joke, but I’m not laughing. “Langston and I just got together. You don’t want us rushing things, do you?”

She waves a hand dismissively. “I don’t see why it needs to take a long time. When you know. You know.”

But we need this to take a super long time. Otherwise, she’ll just go back to setting me up with some guy in India I’ve never met.

And I can’t have that.

LANGSTON

“Let’s go hose each other off,” Jenni tells me after her mom goes back into the house.

“I’m not sure I trust you with a hose pointed at me,” I say.

“So you’re just going to walk home like that, dripping across your floors?” Jenni asks.

I hadn’t thought this far ahead. “Fine. You’re right.”

“I’m right?” She gets this huge smile on her face. “Can you say that again?”

“Why?” I arch a brow at her.

“Because I want to bask in this moment.”

“Oh, brother.” I roll my eyes. “Let’s just get the water hose.”

Luckily, there’s a warm water option on the hoses, since the horses need warm water in the winter.

I stand outside the stable and Jenni drags the hose over to where I am, spraying me down.

I scream like a little girl. “I thought you were going to use warm water!”

“Where would be the fun in that?” Jenni gives me an evil grin.

“This is just wrong.” I stalk past her and adjust the water to a warmer setting. “That was inhumane.”

She’s bent over laughing. “You should have heard yourself,” she says between giggles.

I walk over to where she’s still holding the hose and put my hand in the stream. “That’s much better.”

“You know you started this.” Jenni grins mockingly at me.

“How is it my fault that you just sprayed me down with ice cold water when you could have used warm water?”

“You’re the one who put the idea in my head when you said you didn’t trust me with the hose.” She points the hose to me, and the water forcefully hits my chest, splattering mud up into my face. I squeeze my eyes and mouth shut as she moves from my chest to my arms. I turn around so she can get my back. Then I peel my shirt off because it’s grown heavy and is sticking to my torso.

Jenni is staring at me.

“Were you just checking me out?” I grin.

Her cheeks go red. “No…”

“Sure seems like you were.”
