Caden reached for the covers and gently pulled them up over the boy’s body. Lucas welcomed them, folding himself further into the blanket and letting out a gentle sigh.

“I’m going to run downstairs and get you some water. Do you want me to grab anything else for you?”

Lucas shook his head.

Nodding, Caden grabbed his underwear off the floor and made his way down the ladder to the makeshift kitchen below. He grabbed two bottles of water and then bounded back up the ladder once again.

“Here, take a few sips. It might help you feel better.”

Lucas reached for the bottle and did as he was told.

“Do you want me to leave?” Caden asked, still unsure what he needed or wanted. He had never dealt with anyone who had escaped an abusive relationship before.

“No. Stay. Can you come cuddle up against me?” Lucas asked, lifting the back of the blanket.

“Of course I can. You let me know what you need, babe.”

Sliding in behind Lucas, he let the boy guide his arms into a position that he was comfortable with.

“I’m sorry again if I ruined your night,” Lucas whispered, arms wrapped tightly around Caden’s.

“You didn’t ruin anything. This is still the best date I have ever had. And now, I get to cuddle up against the sexiest man I’ve ever met.”

Lucas chuckled. “God, I’m a mess.”

Caden squeezed his body gently.

“No, you’re not. You had something horrible happen to you, and now your body just needs some time to adjust. You just let me know what I can do to help or what you need from me.”

“This. Just being patient and holding me close like this helps. I think the fact that you were on top of me and I suddenly felt trapped is what scared me. In this position, I can still escape from the front if I need to.”

Caden kissed the back of Lucas’s neck lightly.

“Whatever you need, babe. I’ll always have your back.”

Lying close, Caden listened to their hearts beat together. While he might not have busted a load, this, right here, was so much more fulfilling.

He nestled in closer to the boy, enjoying the feel of his body snuggled up against his.

Caden breathed in his scent as he listened to the steady rhythm of his calming heart.

He would be whatever the boy needed. Whenever he needed it. The boy was his to protect. His to care for. His to grow to…

Slowly, his lids closed, and sleep overcame him.

LUCAS

There was something warm and safe about being wrapped in Caden’s arms. They were firm yet gentle. Like he was trying to protect him but also make him feel safe and able to escape if needed.

Opening his eyes slowly, Lucas stared out into the darkness before him.

The room was quiet, except for the soft breathing coming from behind him. At some point, they had fallen asleep spooning with Caden’s arms wrapped firmly around his body.

Remembering the way he had reacted last night made Lucas’s stomach turn. It wasn’t that he was afraid of Caden or worried that he might hurt him because he knew that he never would.

It was the way Caden’s body suddenly pinned him down on the bed. His full weight on top of him as he struggled to find his lips to kiss.
