Kara rolled her eyes and sipped her lemonade from her perch on a barstool at the kitchen island. She glanced at the woman sitting across from her.
District Attorney Lacey Winters was dressed as casually as Kara had ever seen her. Her auburn hair was down in soft waves around her shoulders. Her cashmere sweater was a soft gray color and paired with black leggings that made her look downright comfortable. Her sharp hazel eyes missed nothing though.
She sipped her whisky and tilted her head at Kara. “I’m not saying you haven’t been cooperative,” she started.
Kara leveled a stare at the DA and raised an eyebrow.
“I’m not,” she said, immediately raising her hands in surrender. “You have literally handed over everything andthen some,” Lacey admitted. “I’m just hoping you have a little bit more up your sleeve. We’re at a loss at this point.”
They might not have been friends before this adventure, but they had run in the same circles and were always friendly. Colleagues. Kara could easily see that changing. The woman was a hard-ass, and Kara respected her for it.
Kara sighed. “I honestly have no idea. We know he has an office offshore. I’m having Jack Adams dig further into Carlita Associates and any properties my father might own down there. I need an address.”
“Who is this Jack Adams?” Lacey asked, eyebrows furrowing.
“He’stheJack Adams,” Danvers said immediately, almost reverently. “He’s a tech genius and the CEO of Adams Inc. He’s a fuckinggenius.”
Kara nodded and flicked her hand at Danvers. “What he said, but he’s Kevin’s brother.”
“I won’t be able to push for extradition.” Lacey frowned. “Not for white-collar crimes.”
“I’m not worried about extradition,” Kara said evenly, shaking her head slowly.
Lacey stared at her head-on. “I can’t be involved in anything il—”
“Don’t worry about it.” Kara shook her head again. “You worry about winning your case. I’ll worry about getting him on US soil.”
Danvers grinned wickedly. “You’ve got an army at your disposal.”
Kara rolled her eyes at the criminal lawyer, a smirk on her lips. “How is it that you’re so brilliant but such an idiot too?”
“You know, Carmichael. One of these days, you’ll leave these men of yours for me.” Danvers smirked.
“I’m in with these men for at least the next eighteen years, so you’ll be waiting awhile,” Kara snarked back.
Lacey’s lips parted slightly in shock before she glanced down at Kara’s plain lemonade. She laughed. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks.” Kara smiled easily at the DA. She had a likable quality to her.
“Well shit,” Danvers swore.
Kara rolled her eyes but was saved from having to knock him down a peg by the opening of the back door in the kitchen. Kara looked over just as all three of her guys came filing in. It was just past eight on a Friday night, early for them, but she watched them all take in the scene in the kitchen warily.
“Hey guys,” Kara greeted with a smile.
“Hey babe,” Kevin murmured as he walked over and wrapped his arms around Kara from behind.
“Hi.” She smiled and looked up at him over her shoulder.
He pressed a kiss to the crown of her head.
“What’s going on here?” Johnny asked, stepping into the kitchen.
“Danvers.” Derrick nodded. He headed for the fridge. “Winters,” he added as an afterthought.
Lacey smirked at Kara. “Freddy boy and I came over to chat with Kara, see if she had any leads on where her father might be.”
Johnny’s eyes narrowed on the DA and Danvers. He stalked around the island until he was standing beside Kara. “She’s already given you everything she has.” He practically growled at the district attorney.
