“I know.” Angela cocked an eyebrow and sat down, clinking glasses with Kira.
Seth smiled. He liked this group.
‘Thanks, Ang.” Jake took a gulp and prodded at the fire with a metal rod. “Time for another log or two. If you’ll all excuse me?” He handed the drink back to Angela. “Would you mind holding this for me for a sec?”
“Of course not.” Angela grinned. “But don’t be too long or I might have to drink it for you, too.”
Jake grinned and stood up. “You do and I’ll tackle you.”
“Definitely drinking it, then.” She smiled deviously and Jake laughed.
Seth laughed. “I’ll help you, Jake.”
Near the back of the cabin, another group of people stood talking as he and Jake walked over. One of the guys looked up and Seth did a double take. The guy glanced at him. “Hey, we’ve met somewhere, I think?”
The dude sized him up, looking a little surprised. “Oh, yeah. You looked at one of my apartments,” he said coolly.
“Oh right.” That was it. The apartment for Stacey.
“Tom.” Tom held out his hand but seemed to be eyeing him cautiously.
“Right. Seth.” Seth shook his hand.
Tom took a sip of his beer. “So are you a friend of Jake’s?”
“Nah, we just met. Well, we went to high school together, as it turns out.”
Tom nodded. “Oh. So how’d you end up here tonight?”
Tom’s tone was still strange. Had Seth done something to offend him? “Through Gia. Do you know her?”
Tom furrowed his brow. “Yeah, I know her well.”
Jake passed them clutching an armful of logs for the fire and cast a curious glance at the two of them. Tom shot Jake a look and Jake walked off. What was this about?
Tom’s voice was a little louder. “So is your girlfriend still moving to town?”
Seth stopped, taken by surprise, and looked around to see if anyone else had heard. It didn’t seem like anyone had.
“No, Stacey’s not coming anymore.”
“Oh, really, because she hasn’t told us yet.”
The truth was, he hadn’t talked to her since their long talk on Sunday when they’d officially broken up. He just figured she would’ve let the apartment complex know she wasn’t coming by now.
But what did this guy care?
“I’m sorry,” Seth said, his tone sharp. “Have I done something to offend you?”
“I’m glad you asked. No—not yet,” Tom said and turned and walked away.
Seth stood there. What just happened? He looked back at the group and saw Tom take Seth’s seat next to Gia. Gia gave him a hug and he watched as Tom held her embrace.
Ah-ha.That made sense.
But there was nothing more than a friendship between himself and Gia. Why was this guy all worked up?
Seth grabbed a stack of logs, returned to the fire, and set them down carefully on top of the others. Gia glanced at him awkwardly about the seat and he waved it off then asked Marcy if he could squeeze in next to her. Marcy graciously obliged. Gia shot him a look and asked silently. You okay?
