“Mr. Justice, you need to let her go so I can examine her!” This doctor is getting on my last nerve.

“Work around me or get the fuck out. But I’m not letting her go until she tells me to,” I growl at the bastard.

I can feel Cami shake her head and pull me closer to her.

“Shh, I’m not going anywhere,” I whisper in her ear.

“FINE!” The doctor places the stethoscope on her back.

He listens and then moves to her front. She moves slightly to give him access, and I flip my eye up to Kit.

He looks like he’s counting the holes in the drop ceiling titles.

“Deep breath,” Cami complies, and I even feel the wheeze.

Next, he takes her temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen level. All normal, thank God. When he’s done taking his notes, he spins on his little stool with a frown.

“Ms. Greystone, we need to discuss what happened to you. Would you like Mr. Justice to leave?” I sneer at him for even suggesting it.

“He means you, Red.” Kit tries for humor but falls flat.

“No.” It’s barely even a whisper, and I’m not sure the doctor even heard her, but he gives us a curt nod.

“Very well, let’s start with the basics. What’s your full name?” He proceeds to ask her all the mundane things to check her memory.

Who she is. Where she’s from, where she is. The year, president, and then the date. That’s the one that stumps her.

“It was Tuesday, I think.” She looks up at me, and I kiss her forehead.

“It’s Thursday,” I whisper, and her frown breaks my heart.

“Two days?” Her eyes are so confused.

“No, Darlin’, it’s been nine days.” The words gut me to say, but the dead look that fills her eyes kills me.

“Do you remember what happened to you?” She turns to look at the doctor.

One nod is all it takes. I glance up at Kit, and I’m sure our faces are mirroring each other.

“Doc, maybe you can come back later to finish this?” Kit opens the door for him to leave as if he really has a choice.

“Boys -,” I glare at the man, and he sighs.

“Alright.” He starts to leave but stops in the doorway to speak to us over his shoulder.

“I can put off calling the station for about an hour. You better get the information you need before then.” Then he turns and looks from Cami to me.

“I have a granddaughter your age. Whoever did this to you earned whatever your man is going to do to him.” With that, he closes the door.

Kit pulls the chair closer to us and takes Cami’s hand in his.

“Who?” he asks the question I can’t bear to ask.

“Danders.” Her voice breaks, and her body starts to shake against mine.

“Which one?” I try to keep my voice level but fail.

Somehow, my tone doesn’t scare her. She lifts her head to meet my eyes, and I know the answer before she opens hermouth. With a shake of my head, she lays her head back on my shoulder.
