I nodded in return, and we spoke a little more about the plans and the time until an attendee arrived with a message.

“Ranisa, Ranaji has called for you. He says you should leave on time to reach before sunset.” Giving her a nod, I called out for Suman and Reva.

“I should leave too,” Agastya said, rising.“Hopefully, we’ll meet again soon, when we’ll be free,”

I smiled softly.“Ji.”

Suman and Reva came with the other attendants, and I turned to them.“Everything’s ready? Shall we go?”

They nodded, and Agastya added,“Let me walk you to the main entrance.” I nodded again, and we began walking.

With every step, I felt the slow ache. The fire built in hadn’t cooled since morning. The sensations pulsed through me, my body betraying me with its need. I was already wet, longing for even the smallest touch of his hand, just one caress.

I saw him waiting near the palanquin. Before stepping out, I lowered my veil just enough to cover my face to my nose. My eyes lifted to see the palanquin, the attendants, the full convoy ready and waiting.

As I moved forward, he extended his hand toward me.

I inhaled deeply and placed my hand in his.

We walked toward the palanquin together in silence. Neither of us said a word. I was caught in a storm of nervousness, arousal, and anticipation.

But what lingered in the back of my mind was a quiet, burning question: How long will this slow fire last? How will it end?

We finally stopped before the palanquin.

“You’re getting late,” he said softly. I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling the weight of many eyes on us.

But I couldn’t stop leaning forward and pressing my forehead gently against his chest. My arm curled around his waist as I muttered under my breath, only for him to hear.“Sheegra aayiega, nahi to ye humaare praan har lega,”(Please come soon, Rudra, otherwise I will get killed with this.) He patted my shoulder and leaned in to kiss my head.

“Dhairya rakhiye, phal meetha hoga,”(The fruit of patience is always sweet, Ranisa.) I closed my eyes and smiled.

Taking a step away from him, I carefully lowered myself into the palanquin.

“Ahh…” A soft, breathless gasp escaped my lips as I settled in.

The moment I sat, I felt the plushness of a cottony mattress beneath me that brought instant comfort. But the moment of relief was short-lived when a fresh wave of sensation surged through me, deep in my body. I shifted slightly, trying to adjust.

Suman climbed in after and sat across from me.“What happened? Are you okay?” she asked. I nodded quickly.

“Why?” I asked, trying to sound as normal as possible.

My lips parted as I breathed heavily, trying to collect myself and adapt to the unbearable heat simmering inside me. The sensations were slowly fading, and I sat back, finding little to no relief.

Suman tilted her head.“You look… high and dry,” she teased, arching her brow.

I was baffled and felt my face flush.

“What? No—” I said quickly, gulping, and tried to shift my focus elsewhere. I placed my hands in my lap, thighs pressed together, which made it worse. The friction and tension drove me mad.

I concentrated on my breathing as the palanquin finally began to move. But with the first few steps, I realised just how cruel this ride would be.

Each lift and drop of the palanquin sent tiny jolts of pleasure through me, and the uneven path beneath us only intensified them.

“Ahh…” I bit my lower lip, squeezing my eyes.

“Nandani,” Suman’s voice cut through the haze. I opened my eyes slowly and looked at her, her expression one of confusion and slight disgust.“What are you doing? You’re acting… weird,” she said.

I took a deep breath, grounding myself.“Oh, Suman… please, not now,” I whispered in a strained voice.
