The boy had learned his lesson, there was no doubting that.

‘I’m so sorry Daddy,’ Kyan said, standing in front of Matteo with his hands on his head and his lower half fully on display. ‘I messed up. I messed up so bad. I don’t know what came over me. I just felt like I needed my old life back, even for just a minute.’

‘I know, baby boy,’ Matteo answered. ‘And you will have it back soon. But you need to hold tight and do as I say until then. But I think you understand that now, don’t you?’

‘I do, Daddy,’ Kyan replied. ‘I really, really do.’

With that, Matteo saw that his darling Little had well and truly understood his mistake and taken his punishment as it was intended. It was time to let go of his fear and anger and give Kyan the aftercare that he deserved.

‘My coffee can wait,’ Matteo said, a kind smile on his face. ‘It’s time for me to break out the cooling gel and get those sweet cheeks nice and calm. And after that, I’ll make us both a wholesome breakfast. How does that sound?’

‘It sounds good, Daddy,’ Kyan replied, a hint of a smile on his face. ‘Thank you.’

‘Don’t mention it,’ Matteo said, taking Kyan by the hand and walking him over toward the refrigerator. ‘I guess neither one of us will look at a TV remote control the same again though, will we?’

Matteo and Kyan laughed together.

The morning may have started off differently to either one of them had hoped, but it was certainly going to be a memorable way for Matteo to say goodbye ahead of his dangerous trip with Steele.

Kyan may have suspected that it was a high risk affair, but Matteo was fully aware of the risks involved. There was a chance he wouldn’t return alive – and if this was the case then Matteo wanted to give Kyan the best goodbye he could…

The rest of the early morning with Kyan was far less eventful than the opening segment, that was for sure. But after plenty of nurturing aftercare and a wholesome breakfast, Matteo bid farewell to Kyan and made his way to the city limits to meet with Steele.

As he pulled up on the quiet side road that bordered a large woodland, Matteo looked around and saw that Steele hadn’t arrived yet. This was nothing to worry about, as Matteo had in fact managed to arrive twenty minutes ahead of the scheduled time.

‘Time to cover all my bases,’ Matteo said, taking his cell phone out and writing a message to Faustino and Michael.

Faustino had arrived to take the first supervisory shift at Matteo’s house ahead of his departure, but with Kyan’s eager ears listening, Matteo had kept things formal and brief.

Both Faustino and Michael knew the severity of the situation, and the three Daddies were all realists too. It simply wasn’t possible to live a mafia life and not be comfortable with death on one level or another. That said, Matteo still wanted to make sure that his two cousins knew how much he valued their friendship…

MATTEO: I’m at the rendezvous point. Waiting for K. I know we don’t do the emotional shit, but… I love you both. True family, true friends. It’s a rare combination, certainly in our world. But if there’s a chance that this is the end for me, I wanted you two sonsofbitches to know that I appreciate you both. I’ll be in touch soon.

With that, Matteo put his phone away and looked out toward the forest on one side and listened out for approaching vehicles. All was quiet. But Matteo knew that Steele would be arriving shortly, and once the two of them set off together it might be a case of walking into the most dangerous storm of their lives…

Chapter 21

Kyan

Kyan, along with Benjamin and Reece, was lying on Matteo’s big bed. Along with their stuffies and a big tray of hazelnut cookies, the three Little friends were happily talking and slowly falling into Little Space as their chilled out tea party went along.

‘I wish my Daddy was here,’ Kyan said, picking Gambit up and helping him to munch on his chunky cookie. ‘But he’s got to go and do some business.’

‘Business?’ Benjamin asked, holding his sippy cup of milk in both hands and taking a couple of gulps. ‘Are we allowed to ask what kind of business?’

Kyan paused. He knew that he most certainly was not allowed to say what kind of business Matteo was getting up to. In fact, Kyan was very quickly realizing that pretty much every aspect of Matteo’s life was off limits to anyone outside of his world. It felt like Kyan had been invited inside a secret club, and while that was fun it meant that he might sometimes feel bad about not being able to share the details with his friends.

‘I…ummm… it’s just silly boring stuff,’ Kyan said, trying to sound as casual as he could before changing the subject. ‘Hisbusiness partner Faustino is going to let us watch three movies and stay up past midnight.’

‘Yay!’ Reece said, waving his stuffie above his head. ‘Faustino seems…’

‘Go on?’ Kyan enquired, sensing that Reece might just have taken a shine to Matteo’s cousin. ‘It’s okay if you think he’s handsome.’

With that, the three Littles giggled as Reece reached for a big fluffy pillow and immediately covered his blushing face with it. Kyan didn’t need to hear an actual response from Reece – his actions told him all he needed to know!

‘Reece has a crush! Reece has a crush!’ Benjamin squealed with delight. ‘I don’t blame you either. Faustino is smoking hot!’

The Little BFFs continued to laugh and giggle in delight. The three of them were all dressed nice and snugly in their favorite rompers with button flaps on the bottom and nice and thick material to keep them warm. All in all, it was a perfectly wholesome scene that made Kyan feel somewhat like his life was back to normal, even if it was only for that moment.
