"You think that'll work?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as he surveyed me.
"Something has to," I said, not feeling as confident as I wanted to. I couldn't contemplate that he would have truly moved on from me already.
It didn't help that Mark wouldn't tell me much. They were best friends and that ensured his loyalty lay with Matthew.
"Did you tell him why I left him at the hospital?" I asked.
He shook his head. "He never asked."
It hurt but I refused to show it.
I walked out of the house and to the back yard. Inside the pool house I found a towel before I headed to the pool. The water was beautiful and I savored the smell of it as I stretched my arms above my head, breathing in the air.
The rays of the sun warmed my skin. I sat down by the side of the pool and put my feet in. The water was cool and soothing. I leaned back on my hands, tilting my head up to the cloudless sky.
"What the hell are you doing?" an angry voice cut in.
I opened one eye and saw Matthew standing beside me with his hands on his hips. Suits definitely looked good on him. Today he was wearing a dark navy one.
"I would have thought that was obvious." I inclined my head to the pool. "People call it swimming."
He was angry and he'd never looked sexier.
"Being outside isn't safe," he ground out. He turned his attention to the huge surrounding wall.
I drank him in while he continued to lecture me. "It's boring inside. I needed some vitamin D."
His eyes drifted back to mine. "Would you rather be dead?"
"Such a spoil sport." I shrugged before I got up.
He hadn't moved so I stood in front of him, our eyes meeting. His eyes broke from mine and drifted over me. He couldn't hide how his eyes flared as they took in the tiny ruby-red bikini. I smiled at him seductively as his gaze lifted to mine.
"You like what you see?" I asked him, teasing him lightly, my eyes sparkling with mischievous intent.
His features turned to stone but I could see the battle within him. His eyes didn't lie.
"I need sunscreen," I said, reaching for the bottle beside the chaise lounge. "Please?"
I swept my tongue across my bottom lip and his eyes followed the action.
"You need to go inside," he said through gritted teeth. His eyes were still fixed on my mouth.
He gravitated closer and I held my breath as I stayed still. I could feel the heat of his body as he leaned closer. The urge to surge forward to close the distance between us was tempting, but I kept fixed to the spot. I feared pushing him would push him away and that was the last thing I wanted.
Our lips were so close but I restrained myself, refusing to give an inch. He had to come to me. He stopped and I waited. Our eyes held.
"Go inside," he whispered. I refused by not following his command.
He swore softly under his breath and he sealed our lips together. His hands cupped my face while his lips moved against mine, taking me with force. I would have him any way I could. Even if it wasn't like he had been before. If that was lost I would make do with what remained.
I opened my mouth as I finally curled my arms around his neck. He took charge as his tongue swirled against mine. That familiar ache and need for him came alive, heating the blood in my veins.
His hands dropped to my waist, lifting me, and my legs instinctively wrapped around him. It was a need—not just a want. I felt like everything that had been happening in the last few weeks had led us to this point. His teeth grazed my lip and I groaned. He walked and the next thing I knew we were in the pool house. He kicked the door closed behind him.
I hung on to him as his mouth slid along my neck, nipping me with his teeth. He'd never been this in control and I reveled in handing it over to him.
He set me down. My legs felt unsteady. His mouth covered mine again as he backed me against the wall, his hands reaching the clasp of the bikini in front. The flimsy material slackened and it dropped to the floor.
