"Good."

So for the moment she was safe but she would not remain safe if the identity of her attacker wasn't discovered.

Slater and I entered the house in time to hear Jordan say, "Both of us?" as she cradled her phone against her ear while she paced the living room.

It was difficult to figure out what was being said on the other side of the conversation.

"Okay," she agreed.

She rubbed her forehead slightly while she listened.

"He is only doing it because he cares," she said.

They were probably talking about Taylor's brother. He had money and I knew he would be doing everything he could to ensure she was kept safe.

"Okay. See you soon," Jordan said before she ended the call.

"Taylor's brother is sending a car to pick me up."

"Where are you going?" Slater asked her with a frown.

Just because Jordan wasn't the main target didn't mean she couldn't be caught up in the crossfire. Slater was right to be concerned about her.

"His driver is going to take me back to the dorm to pick up some clothes and then he'll take me to the apartment he is renting for us."

Slater's expression to a stranger would be difficult to read but I could tell he wasn't completely happy with that arrangement. I wondered if it was because he didn't trust them with her safety or if it was something else.

It didn't surprise me that the brother who had glared at me on my doorstep only a few hours before had already put a plan into action to keep his sister safe. Like I had already told Slater, I knew he would do everything possible to keep her from being attacked again. I could at least give him that.

Hearing about her only made me feel worse.Give yourself a few days and you'll be back to normal,I told myself. She can get on with her life and you can go back to yours.

Despite how things had pushed us to being strangers again I still couldn't stop the feeling that I wasn't finished with her. We hadn't had enough time to work each other out of our systems. I could still feel the attraction just with a memory of her looking at me with her large fluttering eyelashes like she wanted nothing more than for me to rip off her clothes and take her swiftly. I swallowed, trying to ignore the flare of want that burned through me, leaving me with doubt that we were really finished.

I only had to remember the way her brother had eyed me up and down to feel like a dirty secret that she’d been hiding. I was the guy you had amazing sex with, I wasn't the one you took home to introduce to your parents, or the guy you planned the rest of your life with.

No matter what I tried to tell myself or how I tried to explain it away, it didn't ease the hurt that I felt that she hadn't been able to confide in me and she hadn't been up front with her brother about me.

She hadn't broken any of the rules in place. In fact I was the one changing things. I was expecting more than we had originally agreed and it was a very sobering thought.
