Chapter Twenty-Two
My mind was elsewhere. I tapped my pencil against the table, counting down the minutes that felt like hours.
The girl who sat beside me had given up flirting with me. My lack of response had been a clear message I wasn't into it. The only girl I wanted to take to bed was Taylor and I couldn't get her off my mind. But it wasn't just desire or want, it was more.
I was worried. I'd hoped that Taylor reporting the attack would scare the guy off but hadn't happened. It indicated to me that the person wasn't going to stop until he was either caught, or worse, he got Taylor.
A sense of dread covered me like a darkness, making it more difficult to focus or breathe. What if Matthew wasn't enough to keep her safe?Stop it, I admonished myself. Taylor is safe and the expensive bodyguard won't let anything happen to her.
I was preoccupied when I finally left my last class, only to be irritated when the girl who had been flirting with me stepped in beside me. She would have been my type before but the only one who raced my heart now was a pretty blonde with big blue eyes.
"You have plans this weekend?" she asked sweetly, which only got more on my nerves. Even the flowery smell of her perfume was suffocating. She flipped her long blond hair.
"Yeah," I said in a dismissive tone. My previous attempts of sending the message hadn't worked. Maybe she was someone who needed it spelled out.
"Really?" she said, sounding surprised.
I stopped and set my determined look on her. "I'm not interested," I told her as nicely as possible. "I already have plans with someone this weekend."
And I planned to spend the rest of my foreseeable weekends with her.
She looked surprised by my admission. "Are you dating someone?"
Bad boy, Sin Carter, dating? I could see the disbelief in her wide brown eyes.
I didn't date, but what I had with Taylor was more than just an arrangement of sex. I couldn't bring myself to admit it was dating even though we were exclusive. That was enough to break me out in a cold sweat.
"There is someone." I gave her a one-shoulder shrug, trying not to make a big deal out of it. I wasn't ready yet for the world to know how special she was to me. I needed time to get my head around it before it became public knowledge.
"She's a lucky girl," she said with a wistful smile before walking off.
Her words echoed in my mind as I watched her retreating figure.A lucky girl. She deserved much better than me but I wasn't going to admit that to anyone.
That thought stayed with me until I knocked on the door of Taylor's apartment later. Matthew opened it.
"It's for you," he yelled.
Taylor peered down the hallway to see me. Her eyes lit up and my heart inflated like it was going to break free from my chest. She walked to where I was still waiting for her. It still astounded me that she could make me feel like this with only the slightest look.
I matched the smile she gave me. "Hi."
She stepped aside to let me in before closing the door behind us.
"Hi," she said.
Matthew was seated in front of the TV again, flicking through the channels before he turned to watch us. It was like having a third wheel. Taylor took my hand and led me to her room. We heard Matthew laugh as she closed the door.
"Sorry about that—the disadvantages to having a bodyguard," she told me.
"The advantages are he won't let anything happen to you," I said, reminding her why he was an important fixture in her life at the moment.
Her eyes held mine and I felt the chemistry between us. It sizzled in the air, pulling us together like magnets. The slight curve of her lips caught my attention and I really wanted to kiss her. I couldn't fight it even if I wanted to. It was something bigger than the two of us drawing us together. Her eyes followed my slow, deliberate movement of my lips touching hers. Her hands went up against my chest just as our mouths fused together.
It only took a gentle touch of my tongue against her lips to open her mouth. Her arms snaked around my neck, locking me into place as my tongue caressed hers. My hands pulled her body flush against mine as the kiss intensified.
The feel of her against me sent my mind racing.Lucky girl. The thought popped into my mind. Dating and commitment were the words that followed and I felt my body shake slightly at the fear. I stopped kissing her, fighting the strength of her hold on me. But there was no winning. I wanted her and I wasn't going to walk away.
Her fingers touched her slightly red lips, evidence of how hard I had kissed her. And then I gave in and pushed her up against the wall. I gave in to the wild need to possess her, to get as close as two people could. My mouth covered hers, needing and bruising.
