‘That was nice,’ says Judith when the call ends, and I can see why everyone who comes across Judith gives her a special place in their heart.
‘Have you decided on a song then?’ Liz asks Wes.
‘I hope it isn’t cheesy, but I thought this might be nice.’
Wes has the most beautiful, mellow voice and when he begins to sing, everyone falls silent.
By the time he gets to the final bars of a well-known, romantic ballad, we have all joined in.
‘I can see why you have chosen music as a career, you have a big talent,’ says Marco kindly.
‘Thanks, buddy.’ Wes smiles.
Reluctantly, we call it a night as Wes sings a final song, drawing the night to a natural conclusion.
‘That was what I call a beautiful wedding.’ I sigh as I link arms with Marco, who is walking me home.
Wes and Liz, who are staying with Tania and Nicos, headed off to bed and the rest of the volunteers are walking along ahead of us. Panos is walking with Hannah before going home. Marco was going to take a taxi to his accommodation, but Tania insisted he stay with her too, as they have enough room.
‘I agree,’ he says as we stop for a moment to admire the black sky dotted with bright, white stars.
‘It was a beautiful wedding, but there is another wedding I am looking forward to even more.’
‘Oh yes, anyone I know?’
‘Yes, and hopefully someone I will know for the rest of my life.’ He turns to face me then, and I look into his hypnotic blue eyes. ‘And I happen to know that this wedding will be just perfect,’ he says, before moving in for a lingering kiss.
EPILOGUE
‘I’m going to miss you.’
Two days later, I am packing a case and preparing to take a flight home with Marco.
‘I’ll miss you too.’ I turn to Hannah. ‘But you have Panos to keep you company now, as well as everyone here.’
‘I know, but I’m so happy I met you at the airport that day,’ she says, sitting on her bed opposite me. ‘I might have turned around and gone home if not. I wasn’t certain I would get on the plane.’
‘Well, you did. And I actually think you would have been fine, whether I was there or not,’ I tell her sincerely.
‘That’s the thing,’ she says, looking at me directly, and not from under her glasses. ‘You made me believe in myself.’
‘I did? Well, I’m pleased to hear that, but I think all you needed was a little nudge to go after what you want. I think we all need that from time to time,’ I reassure her.
‘Maybe. You also helped me loosen up a bit. I was worried about falling for Panos, but so what if I do? When I return home, we will continue to email each other, just as we did when we first met.’
‘There we are then. And if things are meant to be, then love will find a way.’
‘“Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.” Lord Byron,’ Hannah quotes.
‘There you go then. Who is going to argue with him?’ I say as I lock my case and Hannah smiles.
‘I will text you when I get home, Hannah. Enjoy the rest of your time here.’
‘I will.’ She steps forward and we share a long, affectionate hug.
She walks me downstairs, where I say my goodbyes to everyone, just before Marco arrives to collect me.
‘I won’t walk you to the car, I hate waving people off,’ says Judith. ‘Thank you for everything, and good luck to you both.’
