I staggeredto bed and lay curled up on my side. MY entire body hummed with post-orgasmic pleasure. My mind was going in circles.
That had been, hands down, the best, most insane sex of my life. Max exceeded all my expectations. What had I thought the first time I saw him?
He was built to fuck.
That was the understatement of my life. But that didn’t matter. Our actions had put Max in jeopardy. Even though that had been the best sex a girl could ever dream of, it could never happen again. Max’s career depended on that.
I needed to think about what was best for Max. Sleeping together was a terrible risk to his future.
My phone pinged.
Max: Can I call you?
His text surprised me.
Me: Okay
Wait! I knew Max was sharing a hotel room with another player. It happened every Christmas holiday season when room vacancy was at a premium. He couldn’t have this conversation in front of anyone else.
My phone rang.
My question blurted out, “Where are you?
“Why?”
“Don’t you have a roommate?”
“I’m hiding in the bathroom.”
I relaxed against my pillows. “Oh. Okay.”
Neither of us spoke.
Max cleared his throat, breaking his silence. “It wasn’t supposed to be like that.”
“What wasn’t supposed to be like that?”
“Our first time.”
My heart flipped. “What was it supposed to be like?”
He paused so long, I wasn’t sure he would answer. “I wanted to savor you.”
I curled up tighter in bed, clasping the phone to my ear. Why wasI supposed to stay away from Max? I decided that only the truth could salvage this situation. “I’m not seeing Calder.”
“You’re not?”
“No.”
He took his time. “So, why were you avoiding me?”
“Your career.”
“What about my career?”
“I don’t want you to jeopardize it. If my dad ever found out about this, he’d find a reason to terminate your contract. I don’t want to be the reason you lose hockey.”
“That’s the reason you were avoiding me?”
